Thomas Report 27 Feb 2011 15:23

Hi Thank you all so much.
I am trying to trace Joseph Brown my Grandfather, but have almost given up hope. I thought if I could find his brother Harry I might find him through that. My Grandfather names him on his Militery Records as being Older and in the Royal Irish Rangers, but I can't find a Harry in the Royal Irish
I can find my Grandfathers Military record it gives his Mother Mary Ann as next of kin living at Westcott St, but she isn't there on the 1901 census and apparently not on the 1911 census. He lied about his age on the military records to serve in the Boer War, he was around 14 then. His Marriage cert in 1912 gives his age as 28 so around 1984.
I want to buy his birth cert but there are so many Josephs I can't be sure which he is.
The Harry I found isn't the right one. Apparently there were 2 Peabody Buildings, My Uncle lived in the ones on RedCross Street.
Their Father was Henry and their Mother Mary Ann.
Thank You
Elaine

When and where was your grandfather Joseph born so we can try and trace Harry?

Potty

Potty Report 27 Feb 2011 15:05

When and where was Joseph born?
Be sceptical about memories - they are often inaccurate. My father's recollection of where his father was born was way out and my aunt's memories of her father telling her he served on the Cutty Sark!

The 1911 Harry Brown has parents William and Elizabeth in 1891 so presumably the wrong family

Elaine - Do you know the birth year/ cert of your grandfather Joseph and where he was born??

I can find dozens of Harry Browns in the Census but can't be sure which one he is.
His Father was Henry Brown and his mother Mary Ann. He had a brother called Joseph, my Grandfather. There was possibly a sister. I can't find a family on the 1901 census that fits my father and Uncles memories of them.
On his military record My Grandfather gave his address as 38 Westcott Street, in Southwark.
Is it possible to trace that address on the 1911 census?
I will have another look at the military record.

Thank you
Elaine

Elaine, did you find his WW1 record on Ancestry? If so, you need to go backwards throught the images, not forward as usual.

The image that comes up then shows his wife as Kate Minnie Langrish? Married 2/1/1909. Three children listed: Kathleen Minnie, Ada Doris and Evelyn Josephine.

There is only one page of his military record and it is not vey clear. It just says Harry Brown 29 years 6 months It gives his occupation as a carman,. The only part of the date I can read is 1916.
The address looks like10 G Peabody Buildings but it could be 109.
My Dad who was born in 1919 remembers him as living in Peabody Buildings. He thinks his wifes name was Emma.( Aunt Em) He remembers 2 cousins Joseph and George, but we can't be sure when they were born.
Thanks
Elaine
