Is that a G or J on the image?... |

It has been transcribed as G and does look like a G on the image - it should be J shouldn't it? It is fairly common to get those two mixed up though isn't it? "JEE" and "JAY" ?? |

Particularly hard here in bilingual Canada where, in French, G is pronounced Jay and J is pronounced Jee. |

Well, I always get them muddled up anyway and I'm a G! Serioiusly though I wondered if Chris thought that meant the census I found was not the right one? What do you think? |

OK. So Sarah HOUCHEN marries William Stapleton in 1870 and is living with him in 1871. Is this the same person who is Jane Amelia BURGESS's mother? I haven't been able to find a Sarah or William Stapleton in 1881 or 1891 to rule this out. Can anyone else disprove this? |

Thanks for your help Chris. We've solved one mystery (the name of Charles Burgess's "wife") only to be confronted with another! I think I will have to leave this one as "unproven" - at least for the time being. Shame. |
