Find Ancestors

Thanks Tempest - I found that on Ancestry and then managed to find the 1911 on Genes. I couldn't find anything for Charlotte though - and spent a bit of time on that before moving onto Sarah. (I always seem to pick the right one last if you know what I mean!)

It is actually Emma Gurlings brother that I am connected to but it's nice to flesh out the branches so to speak. I will leave the Allen connection for another day I think!

I've found her!

Her daughter Sarah Ann married William Allen (I don't know if there is any connection with her sisters husband Edward Allen who seems to disappear as soon as he married) but in 1911 Sarah and William are living in Gawber Street, Bethnal Green with their two children - and a Mrs RUNKHAM, aged 74, a widow!

Hurrah! Not bad for an evenings work (and the telly was rubbish anyway).

Thanks both. I think I will need to find some of the children in 1901 - they weren't with their parents! William died in Hackney in 1893 aged 8 as did Walter aged 2. There is a death for Ada also 1893 but in Edmonton so that may not be the same person. Yes, Ethel is Ethel May - not with parents in 1901 but with Mary Bond her mother in 1911. Ellen is Eleanor Victoria and is in both 1901 and 1911. Just for info (and for myself when reviewing this later) there was also another child Margaret - born 1899 Reigate and died 1900 Reigate.

Just found a couple of Godridge marriages with witnesses for Elizabeth Godridge 1907 & Charlotte Godridge 1917

Ethel May Godridge and another with Ellen Victoria Godridge so that may account for the name changes for the girls?

Sorry, no joy in tracing the elusive Emma in 1911 but with just using the index it's almost impossible! Can't wait for the full transcript to come on Ancestry!

It seems that there were a whole host of Godridge children - the 1891 census lists Lizzie aged 7, William aged 5, Ada aged 4, Ethel aged 2 and Walter aged 1 month. None of these are with the same Mary Ann & James Godridge in Reigate in 1901 - curious? I'm off to check death records now. Also on the 1891 is Emma Allen - sister in law (correct) but on her own and listed as single ?? curiouser and curiouser ! In addition, in the 1911 cenus with Mary and Fred Bond, someone called May appears, aged 22. Where was she when the others were in Reigate? and Ellen appears to have become Victoria ??

I have listed above in case Emma is with any of her older grandchildren in 1911 but of those from 1901, the only one missing is Charlotte who is with her aunt.

Yes, I agree as the Emma you have found in 1917 was aged 81 when she died which would be the right age.

Yes, that makes perfect sense doesn't it? Unfortunately, I cannot find the marriage cert on Ancestry for Mary Ann and James Godridge - so, lucky that her sisters marriage cert is there!

James died in Camberwell, Mary re-married in Camberwell, so I think it would also be fair to say that the death I found for Emma Runham in Camberwell is the right one!

A 1911 find would be really good !

Gai, if the witnesses for daughter Emma's marriage where James & Mary Godridge it looks as if we may be onto something! It could that when they were filling in the 1901 census James Godridge only knew his mother in law as Emma so as he married a Cooper told the enumerator that she was Emma Cooper

I have found a marriage of Emma Cooper to Edward Charles Allen 1886 Bethnal Green. Father Robert Fowler Cooper (blacksmith, deceased). So, the Hill family above can be discounted. The witnesses to this marriage are James and Mary Ann Godridge!!

Is Emma Runham (Cooper) with her daughter Mary Ann in 1911 too??
