Now got my grandmother Mary Louisa's birth certificate 12th September 1886 in Lockwood Huddersfield. Her father is, as known, John Hellawell Shaw but her mother is down as Mary Ann Shaw formely Wood. So she is not a Huggett or at least didn't take his name but instead presumably her mothers Sarah Wood. According to my info (unconfirmed) Mary Ann was born or at least baptised 25 Dec.1842. George Hodder died in 1841 and Sarah remarried (William Huggett) in April 1842. But the plot thickens. HELP! |

Hi Ginny, he died in the war - my grandmother reverred him as an older brother (b1869) - thinking about it, that makes Mary Ann quite old when she had him and even older with my grandma. I was only 9 when she died so never really got to talk to her properly |

Hi Ginny, yes that is a puzzle but other evidence is overwhelming. Stories passed down about the ladies maid from the Croydon area for example. Plus the Wood connection. I have a bible given to Dad by a William Wood and he must be Sarah Wood's brother or nephew. And the name Huggett clicked in my sister's memory |

Im really not convinced about Mary Ann Huggett? She is not with the family and nowhere to be seen on the censuses |

Yes Ginny, that's our lot and Mary Louisa is my grandmother. I am suprised thay did not marry but I have to accept it. She had another son Alfred ( illigitimate presumable via the Lord - see above). |

There is no marriage listed for Mary Ann Huggett and John Hellawell Shaw so I would say either Ive missed it or they didnt marry? |

John Hellawell Shaw is correct - notice I was also given Hellawell as a middle name both after Elizabeth Hellawell born 1792. |

Thanks Ann of Green Gables. I don't think that is my Mary - I have a photo of her and I know she was born about 1842. The William could be the one born in 1812 and I did suspect his father was John and not William |
