Free BMD lists Edward Dixon birth Dec 1842 Huddersfield 22/281
Not able to find Ellen Dixon in either Births or Deaths on FreeBDM

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 11 Feb 2011 21:29

there's only one possible John Dixon and Ann marriage that looks likely

Marriages Dec 1842
BRAYE Ann Huddersfield 22 214 ?
BROOK Benjamin Huddersfield 22 214
CROW Ann Huddersfield 22 214
DIXON John Huddersfield 22 214 ?
Downs William Huddersfield 22 214
PETTY Mary Huddersfield 22 214
RAYNAR Martha Huddersfield 22 214
Turner John Huddersfield 22 214

and it would fit very well with

Births Dec 1842
DIXON Edward Huddersfield 22 281

I would get the Edward birth certificate first maybe to make sure of who his parents were

51 Census details
John Dixon, Head,M, 31, Dyer, Lockwood Huddersfield
Ann Dixon, W, M, 29, - , Lockwood Huddersfield
Edward Dixon, S, - , ?, - , Lockwood Huddersfield
Ellen Dixon, D, - , 8Mo, - , Lockwood Huddersfield

Edward appears in 61 Census but Ellen does not and I can not trace a death in Freebmd. I will try to find other children as you suggest

chrissiex Report 11 Feb 2011 20:56

You're very welcome of course !

in 1841 they were probably not married yet, unless in 1851 there were children older than 10. Do you want to post the 1851 census details so we don't have to go looking for them ?

have you looked at for a marriage not long after 1841 ... in the area where the eldest child was born?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

or if you can identify one of John's and Ann's children's births it would have Ann's full name on it

Update on this posting.

Joe Willie Dixon birth cert confirms born 15 Oct 1877 Mother was Mary Dixon and no Father detailed on the Certificate. JWD born in Folly Hall Lockwood which I know to be an area near to Milnsbridge.

'Chrissiex' posting detailing the 1871 and 1861 Census relates to this family so thanks for finding the transcript error of Divan which should have read Dixon and the occupation of Ann Dixon also confirms this.

'Mike' can I ask how you got the Christening details for Mary Dixon as pressumably this birth certificate proves as far as you can prove, that Mary is the Mother.

Have now tracked the Ann and John Dixon family to 1851 via census records but they are not listed together in the 1841 census so a bit stuck on that one.

Can I just say once again many thanks for the help on this search

Adds fuel to your point that he may be Margaret's son.

Richard you (and we) need that birth certificate !

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 7 Feb 2011 22:12

For instance, this could possibly be the marriage of Mary Dixon, who might be Joe's mother

Marriages Jun 1881
BIRD Daniel Huddersfield 9a 555
DIXON Mary Huddersfield 9a 555
Law Mary Elizabeth Huddersfield 9a 555
Wood George Huddersfield 9a 555

but I don't see a Joe Bird or Wood in 1891 who looks similar

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 7 Feb 2011 22:08

well now I feel like I've been on a goose chase

Richard you started by saying

'Trying to find Joe Willie Dixons ancestors. I have found Joe W aged 3 in the 1881 census in Lockwood, Huddersfield listed as Grandson with Ann Dixon listed as Head aged 68 and Mary listed as daughter aged 26 in that census. I have his details from 1901 onwards including his wifes family details.'

You are the one who said he was this Joe Willie, what other birth could it possibly be?

If you have his marriage details, what was his father's name on his marriage certificate ....... did he give one?

One common reason why a child can't be found in a subsequent census is that originally its mother was unmarried but then she married and she and the child are in the census under the stepfather's surname.

Then it is a matter of looking at people with similar names and dates and places of birth and seeing whether any of the mothers look right ........

All of your post are going faster than I can keep up with. Thanks so much for all the info.

Mike * Report 7 Feb 2011 22:02

I agree ... for all we know Mary could be his Aunt.
Just exploring possibilites in case Joe's birth cert proves he is Mary's child.

I don't think we need anymore Joe/Joseph/Willy/Willie/Dixon/Dickinson/Dickenson records though ..... unless they are c1877 and in Lockwood. !

AnnCardiff Report 7 Feb 2011 22:01

it's been fun Richard - do you know there are close on 7,000 Joe/Josph Dixon's in Yorkshire!!!!

Richard

Richard Report 7 Feb 2011 21:58

Thanks to all for your input. The reason for not going for the birth certificate was that I cannot be sure that the Huddersfield 9A/404 was the right one but otherwise I would have gone for it. The 1901 and 1911 census for this family group both indicate Joe Willie being born in Huddersfield so given all you help above it looks like my safest route would be to get this birth record.

I assume the failure to find the family in the 1891 census is not uncommon?

Thanks to everyones for the help

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 7 Feb 2011 21:55

I'm sure Mary Smith was a popular name too ... but it would have nothing to do with someone's question about a particular Mary Smith ....

Mike, I added to my census post above .......... Mary's parents were indeed Ann and John .......... but we should not assume that Mary was Joe's parent I think

This looks like the Mary Hannah Birth ..........( and she has mother Ann)
but christened in Milnsbridge
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mary Hannah Dixon
Birth:
Christening: 18 DEC 1854 Milnsbridge, Yorkshire, England

Parents:
Father: John Dixon
Mother: Ann

Milnsbridge is a district of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may narrow it down to being the birth in 1855 with no middle name

This is the Dixon family in 1871

Ann Divan 49 widow washerwoman
Edward Divan 28
George Divan 21
Margaret A Divan 18
Mary Divan 16

Civil Parish: Lockwood
Town: Lockwood
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England
Registration district: Huddersfield
Sub-registration district: Lockwood

'Divan' is a transcription error by Ancestry, it says 'Dixon'

It is always a good idea to submit corrections to Ancestry, it means others can find the family and also contact you

As you see there were other children of Ann who could possibly have been Joe's parent.

and here is the family in 1861 in Lockwood

John Dixon 41
Ann Dixon 39
Edward Dixon 18
George Dixon 10
Margaret Dixon 8
Mary Dixon 6
Sarah J Dixon 4 MO
