idle thoughts are about all I have left. It says on the memorial 'In memory of the men of this village who died in two world wars'
Six listed for WW1 and 1 for WW11.
I can't find a cyril born there.
i can't find a Cyril living there on any census.
So maybe he changed his name as you said earlier. I think it is a case for the Village historians.

thanks for ruling Cyril B C Beck out Astra -
there must be some info somewhere of when the memorial was erected, by whom and details of the people listed on it - they weren't just plucked out of the air. Is there a local history society ?
would the local authority have records ?
Idle thoughts ....

I've just looked at a picture of the memorial on the net. He is definitely listed but only as Cyril Sprules on the image shown. So where does the BC come from??

'The name on the memorial is quite definitely Cyril B C Sprules.'
Yes Anthea I think we all understood that, else what were we doing here.
The fact that a person used a name does not mean that the name they used was their name, and when no record can be found of a name that a person used, experienced searchers will consider the possibility that the person was using a name other than their own name.
this happens when children of unmarried parents adopt their stepfather's (or biological father's) surname, just as one example.

doubt about his surname. nothing conrete enough for a wildcard search
i really think the best way to go is via victor at the archives
anthea it would be helpful if you could post the full inscription

Just popping in here as i was looking at this earlier before i had to go out. Cyril Blackwell C Beck ended up as Cyril Cutler. His mother I think was Jane Beck and she married John Blackwell Cutler in 1889. I also looked at another Cyril CB who was in Moreton on the Marsh.......I can't bring his surname to mind but i think it began with W. He appears to have been a bank clerk and had a daughter in 1917. There is no service record for him and I couldn't find a link to the name Sprules. EDIT: WADLEY was his name.

Thank you all for your suggestions but I fear none of them help. The name on the memorial is quite definitely Cyril B C Sprules. Before this I tried the CWGC website with no luck. I have tried Glousestershire sites with no response which is where I had hoped someone with liocal knowledge would help

I have not the slightest idea whether any of these people are related to Cyril Sprules, but it seemed logical if we are considering Elsie to trace that family back and identify all its members who could be a parent of Cyril for example.
I don't have a problem LadyKira apart from thinking as many people do that seemingly random records posted in threads are as likely to confuse and mislead posters looking for help as not, that is my sole reason for asking about such seemingly random records.

could this be the book?
This book was written by Ken Fowler and Guy Stapleton (a copy is available in the Record Office library). They began work on the book in July 1999 and completed it in 2000. This collection consists of five folders of research notes, copy photographs and photocopies of personal papers of the individual soldiers killed. Mr Fowler and Mr Stapleton tell the story of the 106 men who lived, worked or trained locally and whose names appear on the memorials in Moreton's High Street and church and in the RAF cemetery. These include 44 men who died in World War One, 8 men who died after their return, 7 men killed in World War Two, and 41 aircrew buried in the RAF cemetery at Moreton. Details of the men include unit, rank, regimental number, awards, name and address of parents, date and place sent on active service, date and cause of death, and details about the place of commemoration

sorry had to nip out to the doctors
not sure what your problem is chrissie
we normally work well together. i saw what you posted but to be honest none of us have hit the mark so we are all following different rrains of thought with the aim of finding him.
Andrew was a bit quicker than me today as i am still onehanded but we were using different sources so slightly fuller info on FMP.
If you read my link some has done research on the war memorial before and published a book but i could not see his name there. i think Anthea needs to find this from maybe her library.
Victor also goes to the gloucester archives each week and has a look up thread. he may well be able to help.

so I will leave her in your fine hands
