speaking for what I found, I thought it would be good to see whether there were any other Applebys living in England who were born in Egypt so I did a search (free) of the 1911 census just for Appleby born in Egypt
........ and then when I found Gordon Stewart Appleby I searched for any Appleby living with him and found his wife
........ and then I searched for his marriage
and it was coincidence that he had a son with the same name as Jonathan born about the same time, so I had already seen the Gordon Appleby born in Kent and it seems more likely he was son of Gordon Stewart Appleby than of Jonathan.
I forgot to look for Gordon Stewart Appleby in 1901, lol, so LadyKira did that. And she googled probably things like Appleby Alexandria and found the information about their business.
I hope you get the marriage certificate for Gordon Stewart Appleby because it really is a possibility that he is Jonathan's brother I think, especially since Jonathan had a son named Gordon. The certificate won't prove that but it will give you more information to investigate such as the older Gordon's father's name and occupation.
and another tip is not to have two threads about the same thing, just put another message in the thread you have to ask for more help.

I skimmed it too quickly the first time .....
To a very large extent, Appleby Bros was the organisation which fathered the modern crane industry. Henry Coles became their Assistant Manager in 1875, succeeding Alexander Grafton, who was appointed Appleby's permanent engineer in Egypt, and who later started his own crane making business in London. Other Appleby protégés did the same thing, although only Henry Coles' company remains to this day.
what we need is for Nicola to read these things I think .............

3 children, Florence 1906 who was born in Egypt, Henry 1910 and Gordon 1911 who were born in Harpenden, Herts.
Births Jun 1911 ??? Appleby Gordon A Medway 2a 770
the only Gordon Appleby between 1909 and 1915, maybe he also was born outside England?
Births Mar 1910 APPLEBY Henry George St. Albans 3a 782
possibly intresting ... in 1911 this person wasa born in Alexandria Egypt ...
APPLEBY GORDON STEWART M 1884 27 Medway Kent living with APPLEBY MARGARET ANN F 1886 25 Medway Kent
I think very interesting because I would guess this is a brother and this could be of some use !

edit even better he did marry in England
Marriages Dec 1910 Appleby Gordon S Gateshead 10a 1521 <<<<< Bramwell Sarah R Gateshead 10a 1521 RUTHERFORD Margaret A Gateshead 10a 1521 <<<<< Sowerby John A Gateshead 10a 1521
..... if that is him ..... maybe not but I think it has to be ... if it is it would give a father's name who could be the right father for your Jonathan <<<<<
no births to that marraige it seems .... oh but of course, the Gordon born i in Medway in 1910 is probably one
