I would get the marriage certificate found by safc and find out his father's name and occupation. It is the only way you are ever going to be sure. |

The surname for 1861 was down as Nuttarble and as there is no other Nuttarble on any census so take it it has been written down wrong which often happens with our surname. It is Nuttles,Nuthall and more. |

This is a real pickle as in the 1861census they were living in Witton Gilbert, Co, Durham. with 3 children then moved on to Prudhoe |

Yes Astra this is the John Nuttall. I was told that they ran away to marry but do not know where that was. She was disowned by her family. Yes there first son John was born in Wigan I do have that record. If as they say they were married in 1853 she must have been pregnant as John was born 7 Sept. 1853 |

But according to the OP the child born in 1841 was Edward not William and there is no baptism of a John listed to Matthew and Alice. |
