do you know when William snr died? Is it worth looking for a will which may name a brother or sister as an executor. Cos to be honest looking for the right baptism of a William Rigby over a span of 2 years in this area could throw up several possibilities. |

Hi, again. Found baptism record for Margaret, daughter of William and Mary Cottam, St John's Preston. |

Just had a reply from Preston records office. There was a marriage listed at St John's Preston for William and Mary 26 May 1834, but marriages before 1837 didn't list parents of bride and groom. They suggest that I look for Baptism record, perhaps starting at St John's. |

do the churches at Cottam, Lea or Newsham feature anywhere in your research. They are the nearest churches to Woodplumpton where William was born, assuming that William was RC. He was not baptised at Woodplumpton Parish church (St Anne) as all those years are on lan-opc. There are several Rigby's but it is a fairly common name in these parts. |

actually Mike - the 1834 marriage would not be on lan-opc at St John's because the transcriptions finish at 1833 for marriages |

Hi. Yes it is a shame. I've been on to Preston Records office and submitted an enquiry about the William and Mary marriage in 1834. Lets hope I get a reply. Where do we go from here? |

Liverpool & Manchester do not have mmn transcribed on lancs bmd, in fact a lot of Liverpool is not on there at all. John James b 1867 also does not have mmn transcribed (Ashton comes under cheshire bmd) |

Hi. Yes that's the marriage I've got. It's the only one listed on BMD for William and Mary that year. He was still single on 1861 census, but on 1871 census there lists Elizabeth, daughter age 9 (1862?). On BMD births it lists Elizabeth's mothers maiden name as Medcalf. I haven't found the other children though. |

If the marriage was at St John's it would be on Familysearch. |

There isn't an RC church St John's in Preston - St John's (now Preston Minster) is the CofE parish church. |
