I wonder if you can find the records at both of the "homes"
They sound like RC institutions so may well have records.
I would try the nearest local studies cenre first.

Thank you all for your efforts, I should perhaps add that we have the marriage details of Winifred to Wiliam Usher Duke in 1904 and also her death in 1965, we still however are no closer to finding her birth details, I have now sent for the b cert for Winifred 1880 to see if this may be her, I have taken careful note of the helpful info about dates not being reliable, I will add a message if and when I find her
Once again thanks everyone
Lyn xx

Felt the need to jump in. ;)
I really liked the look of:
Births Sep 1876 Kegan Winifred Mary A S. Shields 10a 792
especially when I couldn't find a marriage or death for her -- but I suspect this is her in 1881:
Name: Wineford Cagan Age: 4 Estimated birth year: abt 1877 Relation: Daughter Father's name: Andrew Cagan Mother's name: Jane A. Cagan Where born: Hebburn, Durham, England Civil Parish: Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow County/Island: Durham Registration district: South Shields
and maybe a marriage:
Marriages Sep 1899 Keegan Winifred Mary A S. Shields 10a 1300

This may well be her, cos I am told that she worked as a Laundress in South Shields, BUT am still unable to find a birth cert, in the Name of Barrett or Scott with that dob, do you have any idea where I might find further information regarding the Grange, I have the time to go to library's etc and am prepared to travel to find the info. I have Googled The Grange, but cannot find any relevant info - Thanx Lyn xx

Firstly thank you for all of you who are trying to help, we have also found most of this info, the problem being we are unable to make a definate identification, I have requested the brith cert for Winifred b 1880 to see what info it holds and I already have the birth details for Winefrida b 1856 - I think there may be a link but its def not her, too large a discrepancy in the dob, I am very attracted to the Winifred who was in the Grange Framwellgatemoor, but I do not know where to look for further info on it, and I am curious as to why there is no def record of her birth. My aunt mantains she was born in October either the 15th or 25th strangely she does not know what her mother or father were named. her address when married in 1904 was 8 Walton Place, Sunderland the same as her spouse William Usher Duke born c 1876 in 1911 census 112 Victor St, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, in 1881 she is listed (we think) with Isabella, herself and brother John at 28 George St, Sunderland. In later life she lived and died in 1965 at Finsbury st, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland., there has never been any other mention of her Father George except on her marriage cert. would I get any relevant info from her Death cert? Phew, once again thanks everyone for your efforts. I must find this lady - its driving me mad!!! Lyn xx

Lyn Just another thing to consider that I was reminded of last night when I looked at one of rellies. This will help show the problems.
Alice is first shown with her parents with 5 children listed as married but she and her children are all with her maiden name of Wilde.. She then marries Mr Scott from next door. Mr Scott was previously married and had 2 children with his first wife Mary. When Joseph dies she marries Mr Rimmer and has a furthur 3 children. Henry was also previously married to another Alice and already had 6 children. He was also previously married to Ann and had 4 children with her. Ann was also previously married and also had a child. The children on censuses and other records are never sure which parent or step parent to use. Sometimes they use a mixture of the surnames. Sometimes life was very complicated but people did marry again quickly if they needed a breadwinner or mother for their children. What I am trying to say is that sometimes the records may not give all the information. The example above involves 7 marriages and 21 children.
