Lyn I just wanted to let you know incase you don't already St Bedes Church in the info that SAFC found was for many years the only Catholic Church in Jarrow & the surrounding area so keep that info in mind when you're going through your info as you mentioned that the family were Catholics. |

Thank you for that = i didnt in fact know that, most of our research has centred on Sunderland, because our two surviveing rellies that knew her are adamant that she always lived in Sunderland, however they may not have any knowledge about her very early years - my aunt says she was a great one for telling stories, but she doesnt recall her ever mentioning being in a convent, though she told us she worked as a laundress in South Shields. She apparently never mentioned her mother and father since neither can remember either of them - Cheers Lyn x |

We have found that the Grange, was both a Convent and a 'home' it took in orphans, and immigrants from ireland, and young friendless women, and trained them to a trade. there is some information about it found by using Google, but there are no index's available on line that I can find, so I think its a trip to the library, by the way, the place still exists, but not in its past format |

The problem we then have is the birthdate. |

We think that this is the correct entry, we were thrown off course because of the birth date of 1880, cos with that date you cannot find any other entry for her, however there seems to be an error on the system/indexing? cos if you search in all records with a +/- of 2 yrs she then shows up with a birth year of 1878, which would be correct, I have sent for the birth cert, for for more info, but have now located her in most census years, it would seem that she traveled to Kent where she is listed as a visitor, she then appears to have returned to the North East and we think.. it is our Winifred who is at The Grange convent aged 24 |

Well disappointment all round, neither of the Winifred birth certs I sent for appear to be for the right person, so we are back to square one unable to find her - am now compeltely stumped, and don't know where else to look |

Birth certs came but disappointingly don;t appear to be the Winifred we are looking for, am now running out of ideas of where and how to search further for her. I do know that she died in 1965 aged 88, so that puts her dob firmly in 1876 so she did not lie on her marriage cert. Any ideas gratefully received |

Even allowing some latitude for the dob we have been unable to locate her, if she lied about everything on her marriage cerrt including her age and fathers name, then we really have no way of finding her,. We have been unable to locate any Winifred with a father named George, who we can tie into her with any certainty, as I said we are now stumpted, since we really don't know what we can or cannot believe, however the 2 certs i Have don't fit with anything that we know either - I just dont know where else to look or what to look for!!! |

It is now February and we are still looking for Winifreds B cert, we have come back to the 1881 census entry in Newcastle, but there seems to be an error with this as well. On 1881 census there are two Winifred Barretts, one is living with a Thomas and Mary Barrett in Newcastle with other siblings dob c 1876. The other Winifred Barrett dob c 1880 is listed as living with Isabella Scott mother and brother John Barrett, also with them is Elizabeth Wells, born Norfolk, they are living in Sunderland but give Newcastle as place of birth. We are unable to find a GRO number for her. the only one we have found is badly transcribed and on one site is listed as 10b 444 and on another as 10b144 however the dob is of the Winifred Barrett dob 1876, we are unable to find a GRO for Winifred Barrett born c 1880 - can anyone help? |
