I should have added that Catherine on the 1851 was William's wife.

Chevaun, please look in your inbox. I have sent Maurice on the 1851 census with his parents.

For some reason it won't post here.

Alas, Irish records are a bit sparse! It was not uncommon for Irish people to come over here to escape poverty and once here they would work hard and save money to send home. The money sent home was often used to pay the passage for another member of the family to escape the poverty.

It was also not unusual for servants to move around looking for work or move with the family that employed them.

Hi rootgatherer,
Sorry I have been very busy of late so unable to update this post til now.
Just to let you know I bought the marriage certificate for Maurice Fleming and Mary Leary, the ocupation for them both at the time was Servant - so no soldior connection at this point...
Fathers names were Garreth Fleming and Michael Leary.
Not sure how I proceed from here, any ideas?
Best wishes,
Chevaun.

Thank you for filling in all the birth place details, from your findings it would seem that they probably all came over to England together or if not certainly knew each other from back home.... so interesting... I think that Nagle must be a connection so I'm going to purchase the marriage certificate for Nagle/Clements and see if I can work back from there...
Thank you for your continued support and interest, it's nice to be able to rumminate over these details with someone.
Best wishes,
Chevaun.

Chevaun, I have filled in birthplace details for all in that 1861 census. I wonder if Patsey was Mary's sister-in-law? I did wonder about the Nagle connection. Although Johanna is listed as unmarried she may have had a brother that came over from Ireland too. I am thinking that when you get the marriage certificate that Maurice's occupation may be soldier.

Thank you for perservering with posting the Census, I'm very grateful. interestingly that report throws up another name that married into the Clements family (Nagle), you can see that i included this name at the begginning of this posting way back in October, I wonder if they are connected...
I've decidid to go ahead and buy the marriage certificate for Maurice and Mary that you found the record for, I've had a think about it and my gut is telling me to go with it, even though I can't make out the Cheltenham connection... It would have meant that they would have travelled over from Ireland and then to Cheltenham and then back out to Wales to have the children, then to London... I'll let you know how I get on!
Thanks again, you've been a great help.
Best wishes,
Chevaun.

Since most folk couldn't read and write then, I wouldn't worry too much about the spelling. I did find a possible for Mary on the 1861 (on Ancestry) but for some reason this site wouldn't let me post it. I also found a M. Fleming, soldier (1861) at Aldershot, born Ireland. I used FreeBMD for the marriage.

EDIT

Still won't let me post it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See is living in Fulham as a Boarder and is married, b. Limerick.

Hi Rootgatherer,
Thank you for your nice message. I was pleased to be able to feedback to you your positive result, I was so happy to have the marriage confirmed.
I'm very grateful for your continued interest in this family line, I'm finally finding my feet using this site and freebmd but this family tracing definately takes some time and I get a bit despondent when the records keep turning up no results! Is there a secret that I don't know with regards to the searches or are you using a different site?
Having looked at the new info you have provided, I think that it's a good possibility that the marriage could be Maurice and Mary... Leary is definately an irish surname. The only thing is the spelling on young Mary Flemings marriage certificate to George Clements had Fleming with two mm's (Flemming), this marriage only has the one m by the looks of things, what do you think?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 14 Feb 2011 22:21

I wonder if this could be Maurice and Mary's marriage?

Looking at the 1861 census, it looks like John Keef married Elizabeth Pike.

Chevaun, Thank you for taking the time to let us know that it was the correct marriage certificate. It is always a p;easure to help and gratifying to know of a positive outcome.

Good luck with your research.

PS, I don't think we answered your question about where Maurice was born - the 1891 census (the only one I can see him on at the moment) says born: Tredegar, Wales. According to the 1891 the whole family were born there.

Hi Rootgatherer,
Just wanted to say Thank you and well done, I bought the marriage certificate of Mary Flemming and George Clements, which you found the reference for, it arrived this morning and it was the right entry... Mary WAS only 16 when they married! Thanks ever so much again, I had no luck finding the entry when I searched myself!
Best wishes,
Chevaun.

Thank you so much Rootgatherer for all your research!
I'm so happy to have a match for a marriage between George and Mary as they went on to have many more children (including my great grandmother) and I was surprised to think that they wouldn't have officially committed to each other in their lifetime.... I will go ahead and buy the certificate.
Thanks once again Rootgatherer and also Jax for taking the time out of your day to assist my search, I'm really so grateful.
Apologies for my delayed response this afternoon, my wireless mouse ran out of batteries and I had to dash to Sainsburys to replace them!
Best Wishes to you both,
Chevaun.
