Find Ancestors

Re Mundia, my results seem to be a little different.

I wanted to find a name in a private tree at Ancestry that wasn't in a public tree. Thought this would be a long process. Started with an unusual name in my tree, Monck.

I found this name:

Kind Mönck - 1760

in four "personal family trees" and if I want to view I get the message that the tree is private and I have to contact the member.

The name is not in any public tree at Ancestry.

At Mundia, on a search for the name, I get access to a tree posted by someone with the same surname as is on the four Ancestry trees. But possibly a different initial.

So -- are these two separate trees? One posted at Ancestry, and one posted at Mundia?

Or is the one at Mundia a copy of one of the personal (private) trees at Ancestry?

I'm confused. But if it is in fact a copy of one of the personal trees, I'm distressed. Not because I have a tree at Ancestry, because I don't and won't. (I really do regard the information in my tree as *my* intellectual property, because I did all the work that created the tree. And that was a whoooole lot more than just looking up records.)

Christine -- the bullet point you refer to will work for anyone who *knows* what's going on at Mundia. I use Ancestry daily and I'd never heard of it.

I have also had parts of my tree copied by someone on Ancestry.

By their tree, my gggg grandfather was married 4 times, two different wives at the same time of course, lived in 2 different towns, and died a year later than my grandfather!!

As you can probably guess, there were two babies born with the same name, in the same district a year apart, they have been combined to make 1 person.

When I contacted them to delete certain information, I was told that I had no idea what I was talking about. They would not amend their tree!!!

Just to update..I got in touch with Ancestry re the Mundia site and expressed my concern and that of others that privacy was an issue..this is the reply I got..

You are correct that the two sites share tree information. However, if you have your tree listed as Private and not searchable on Ancestry.co.uk, the tree will not be searchable on Mundia.com.

Would you mind letting us know which tree you are concerned about that you have listed as Private on Ancestry.co.uk and are currently able to view on Mundia.com? We will then be happy to look further into the situation further for you.

If you put info into the public domain, there is nothing you can do if people copy it.

If you wish to keep your research to yourself, put it on a tree program on your own computer....don't put it where the world and his wife can see it.

I know what you are saying Flick..but what is happening is that people who have been given permission to view a private tree are copying that info and putting it on a public tree..you trust these people I presume as they are relatives..that is why I never share my `full` tree with anyone.The one that has all my pictures and hard work that has taken me years to get at a very costly length.I have branches of the trees with limited info in seperate trees that I will share but only if I truly think there is a definate link.I have been stung in the past by someone who gave nothing but took everything..I am glad to say that as it was the early days of my searching a lot of the info was wrong..they still have the wrong info and have made no effort to correct..all they did was add numbers to their trees..I would sooner have a small tree with correct info than a large tree with a collection of tom,dick and harrys rellies that have no meaning...perhaps we should all think very carefully before we allow others to view at all?...

Coming back to the issue about the Mundia site, which is a new one to me.

I have just searched for a tree which I know is private on Ancestry and none of those offered for the (deceased) family member is listed. As the tree owner had sent a screen shot, it was easy enough to compare. So perhaps the privacy issue has been addressed, or was a clitch in the Beta format.

i have deleted the so called ( name collector ) only yesterday the person and added 37 names to his tree ! the day before 20 odd and so on. every time i logg on he's added more names.
i myself have had contact from people who have given me information on my ancestors i cannot add them because i don't know who my gggg grandfather's parents where.
but this person just adds any old name to his tree. how sad is that.
he once told me my great grandfather wasn't born where i know he was born, there where 3 people with the same name same date of birth but born some where else in the country therefore connected to royalty. he still has that other person on his tree . obviously copied from some person's tree.
i also went on the mundia site looked at trees the other day now i cannot look at them so maybe it was a error on their part.

Hi Deborah, I see what you mean but I keep some info on Genes and the most of my information {Private} is on Ancestry That way people can contact me and I can give some information, what I do is give the name of the father and mother {no dates} and how many children they had, that way if true people they will have to find out themselves, I alway try and get proof numbers so I know it is correct.
I to have spent a lot of money on finding out infomation.
Some people are very helpful and if I find part of my tree with proofs and others are incorrect I will contact them as we don't want our family tree to be a mistake on other trees and visa versa.
