There's a tree on Ancestry that has James Edward Owen Atkins born 1886, Paddington but it's a private tree. You have to contact the owner.
Just a thought, though, the guy on the attestation papers says he was born Brighton.

NEW REQUEST

I am now pretty sure that Mary Jane ATKINS who is on the passenger list is my relative, nee SMITH, born 1891 in Towersey, Bucks (now Oxon).

It appears her husband was James (possible middle initials E O) ATKINS, born probably Brighton, but has also been listed as born Ontario, Canada.

It also appears she was previously married to a VEACY although I haven't tracked this marriage down (probably quite prone to mistranscription).

I would now like to try to trace what happened to James ATKINS and Mary Jane nee SMITH in Canada.

Please could anyone with access to the records look up any births to this couple, probably in Ontario, post 1920, and any possible death registrations, we believe that Mary Jane was still alive in ca. 1960 at least.

Also any official info about the two children who travelled with her to Canada, Kathleen and Ruth VEACY (may have changed name to ATKINS).

I have contacted the Ancestry tree holders mentioned in earlier posts, but as yet no reply.

I appreciate some of these records may not be available.

Many thanks

Helen

1911 Census of Canada

I suppose James A might be James O - you decide

He immig in 1910, same as the rest of this family.

mgnv, that could be him I guess, it gives month of birth as Oct 1886, and his birth reg on freebmd is Dec qu 1886, so that would fit, can't find a Bawne Atkins marriage on freebmd, so unless related on his maternal side, it might not fit, I'm really more interested in what happened post 1920 to James and Mary Jane, thanks, Helen

NEW INFO

I definitely now think that Mary Jane Veacy who married James Edward Owen Atkins in 1918 is my relative, the elusive Aunty Mary who went to Canada.
I bit the bullet, forked out my £9.25 and bought the marriage certificate:

St Nicholas Church, Brighton
3rd April 1918
James Edward Owen Atkins, 31, bachelor, occupation C.S.M. 6th Canadian Reserve, residence South Camp, Seaford, Sussex, father Albert Edward Owen Atkins, gas fitter
Mary Jane Veacy, 26, widow, residence 27 Victoria Street, father Thomas Smith, farmer
witnesses Alice King and Cecil Adrian Giaoux (? spelling), they could be "professional witnesses" for that particular church, or possibly friends/relatives although they are not names I have come across in this branch of the family

NEW QUERIES:

can anyone find a marriage between a Mary Jane Smith and a Veacy, I can't for the life of me, nor a death for a VEACY that looks likely, I guess she may have had illegitimate children and made up a "dead husband" to look more respectable

can anyone with access to any Canadian records (e.g. newspaper archives etc) find any trace of them after Mary Jane Atkins went to Canada in 1920 with children Ruth and Kathleen? I think the 1921 Canadian census is going to be released in 2013 but not sure I can wait that long

I'd really like to find out what happened to the family.

Thank you in advance, Helen

Thanks MadBull, we already have birth refs for Kathleen and Evelyn (on page 1 of thread), sorry I should have mentioned that again. Evelyn registered as Smith mmn Smith not Veacy but was Veacy Atkins when they travelled to Canada in 1920.

Thanks again
