sorry to hear you dad passed away but am sure he knew you were searching and that will have pleased him. I shall need to copy and paste so i can so my dad in a form he can read easily but i shall pass it on and he is already taking an interest. He manahed three grocers shops that were hugely popular and am trying to trace photos of them through an edinburgh site. it helpsme to understand who he is and where he came from clearly very poor folk way back. I shall pass on your good wishes.

Yes, FBG, you found the obvious that somehow eluded me. ;)

I shall blame Ancestry, I shall.

You're lucky to be able to tell your dad things, Lorraine. I tell my mum things all the time, but my dad died 7 years ago, just months before I discovered all this genealogy on line. Tell him we're glad to have helped!

His 1899 death record at SP will be viewable like the marriage certificate -- all my credits have expired so I can't help. But if you do want to know his cause of death, that's what you'll have to look at!

I still can't find Christina in 1881 for love nor money, so my hands are showing me up. ;)

I have now had time to read you post in full this is so interesting and when my father comes up for his 80th birthday I shall be able to tell him for the first time that his grandfather was ashale labourer hard work and possible he died through work, it must have been unusual for poor families to be insured in those days. this is new to me.

You're very welcome -- and remember, SP isn't subscription, it's just credits, and you can buy as little as 5 pounds' worth.

I have had no luck finding Christina in the 1871 or 1881 census. Don't know why!

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 31 Aug 2010 20:07

this is quite amazing and answers why cristina was head of the household. my fathers grandfather has died, it would appear quite young. It will be fun to try and find what he died off. as soon as i can i will subscribe againt o scotlands people and use the helpful info above to guideme through. thanks.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/igi/individual_record.asp

A Mormon has submitted this information in the International Genealogy Index:

John Dutton
Birth: 1860 , , Ireland
Death: 09 NOV 1899
Father: John Dutton
Mother: Elizabeth Mcleary

The death date certainly makes a match; whether the parents' names are accurate is a question.

The same person likely submitted this:

John Dutton
Death: 09 NOV 1899
Father: John Dutton
Mother: Elizabeth Mcleary
Spouse: Christina Emslie Wilson
Marriage: 11 JUL 1890 Kirknewton, Midlothian, Scotland

That's a pretty specific date so it looks like it was taken from a parish record -- which is what you need, from scotlandspeople.

I was looking for a Christina Wilson with a father James in the 1881 census, because the Scottish naming pattern would make her second son named for her father.

The IGI has this baptism taken from a real parish record:

CHRISTINA EMSLIE WILSON
Birth: 21 APR 1870 Uphall, West Lothian, Scotland
Father: JAMES WILSON
Mother: ELIZABETH CAMERON
Batch No.: C116721

To practise using the resources yourself, go to the link for the IGI:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/customsearchresults.asp

and search for that birth -- Christina Wilson born 1870 in British Isles, Scotland, with parents James and Elizabeth.

When you click on her name, you get what I copied above. Then click on the C116721 and search for just the father's name: James Wilson. You'll find a Robert Wilson born the following year who could be her brother -- except the mother's name is different, so it would have had to be a quick second marriage!

Hi Lorraine -- I had a spare moment so checked the 1891 census, and this *could* be them:

Name: John Dutton
Age: 30
Estimated birth year: abt 1861
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Christina
Where born: Ireland
Occupation: Shale Labourer

Name: Christina Dutton
Age: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Relationship: Wife
Spouse's name : John
Where born: Uphall, Linlithgow

Registration district: Uphall
Civil parish: Uphall
Town: Broxburn
County: West Lothian
Address: 121 Holygate

Christina's age is off a way, but she could have fibbed, or it could be transcribed wrong (you can see the original at scotlandspeople, but not at Ancestry where I took that from).

There's no other Christina Dutton in Uphall in 1901 to account for that one in 1891, and childen born after 1891 also fits.

Did you get the marriage record to see the husband's name?

Oh duh. The address in 1901 is Holigate 121 and the address in 1891 is 121 Holygate. So I think we have the right household. ;)

An annuitant is a person living off an annuity -- an investment that pays them an income for life, usually left to them by a husband or father. It might come from an insurance policy, I think.

i managed it your great for simple to follow instructions. I should have known i wuld be hooked before i got the skills but am learning fast thanks to you all

Dea Report 31 Aug 2010 17:54

Hi Lorraine,

You found your way here then ??

The link to the site for the band photo won't open by just clicking it.

You will need to copy it into the top address bar.

Do you know how to copy and paste?

If not, left click your mouse and pull it accross the link to highlight it, then right click on the words and a menu will come up - click 'copy'

Then, open a new page on your browser - go to the address bar at the top - right click the mouse and from the menu click 'paste'.

Then press the arrow at the side to go to the page.

Just about to get my grandson ready so I can take him hime.

Will check back later.
