PS:
If you go to https://archive.org/details/familyofbayleyof00axon/page/n9/mode/2up you can read all about 'my' family.

A fascinating lot with so much past history. And that is where I found about the grisly end to my man which led me to a transcript of his inquest. The coroner blamed WKB's "age and corpulence" to him falling between the open door and the train itself. OUCH.
:-(

Thank you for your comment ArgyllGran! That's what I thought and what I was trying to achieve.

This chap is dead and buried now - literally.

A colourful character with an awful end [which led me to wanting to know more].

Merely changing the title without saying what you actually want to know NOW - 14 years down the line - is not helpful, I'm sorry to say

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Mar 2024 17:09

I don't know what the original title was, but I'm sure his name is the most helpful title!

Are you still looking for information about him, Nicola?

nameslessone Report 21 Mar 2024 17:07

After all this time an update on what you have found in the last 14 years and what you are hoping for now would be of a great help.

If you haven’t already done it you should look again at places you looked at in 2010, new ‘stuff’ often pops up years later.

Hope it's OK to change the title of this thread?

It's an old thread and I realise that it looks more helpful to put his name in the title!

I've looked at the original that Mrs. Grumpy found. His place of birth is N/K!

I'm not 100% sure but I think his occupation is given as Ind - meaning of independent means.

Is this the same man in 1851??

I've looked at the original and the R is probably a K, not very well written. Interestingly I note that there is a tick in the column headed Whether Blind or Deaf and Dumb.

Hhmm, alright for some! Retired now.

Thank you to one and all, I think that's definitely nailed him.

Somerset Girl - if you're interested, since you've found his death, his was a very grisly endindeed! See my thread 'Gruesome death at Kings Cross'. Poor chap went under the train wheels. Ouch. Widely reported in The Times owing in some part to the fact that he was a Barrister I think. Have found his monument in All Souls' Cemetery and the kind peeps there are going to clear away the undergrowth and take pix for us.

SAFC - how did you do that? Please let me know your tips. I've tried since and am still failing where you succeeded.

Bed time now though; back tomorrow.

He may have birthplace showing as N/K because someone else in the household completed the form/gave the info and didn't ask your man. They may have known he was born abroad but not much beyond that ...

Enhanced Viewer:
Hi peeps - thank you - I finally managed to bypass it but in the meantime also managed to send an e-mail to Ancestry!! Hey well, never mind.

Jill, you don't need to download the enhanced viewer. I never do. Just click on "No, just show me the image"

Janice

Janice Report 2 Aug 2010 13:54

I've just looked at it too and think it says Ind (there's another one on the opposite page that is clearer)
Wish they'd give these enumerator jobs to people with extremely legible writing!!

Mrs Grumpy - at the bottom of all the small print blurb about the viewer there should be a 'Continue' thing you can click on without downloading the viewer.

Nicola'S Report 2 Aug 2010 13:27

My ancestor's name is WILLIAM KENNEDY BAYLEY, born 1805 in Jamaica.

However, I know for certain from the archive records at Lincoln's Inn Fields that he was already in the UK by 1930.

I cannot find him in the 1841 Census. He should be in London at that time for his legal training, although there is a little whisper that he could also have been in Stockton (on-Tees?).

I don't expect him to be with any family members, since his father died in Jamaica before WKB set sail for the UK and I think that his mama may have remained there but sent her only child back 'home' for his education.
Any eagle eyes out there today, please? I may not be able to get straight back to this during the day but will check later on this evening.

Many thanks.
