I've just been going through the censuses again. I can't find him in the 1851/61 but in the 1871 there's a John Farrar and Alice, with son John, living in Garden St., Liverpool. John is given as 41 and Alice 47, with the 4 year old son. That could fit with Bridget dying in 1855 and being in her 40's is late for Alice to be having a child don't you think. |

It looks like a strong possibility. The name is spelled the proper way but the ages fit from the 1871 census. The only difference is his birth place is given as Liverpool in the 1881 and Isle of Man in the 1871. Interesting! |

I think my only course of action now is to wait until the family member gets back from vacation and ask her where she got her info from and just see how correct it is. |

I now have the death certificate for Bridget Farrer (nee Salmon). She died 1 Mar 1855 at 29 Preston Street, Liverpool. It says she was the wife of John Farrer, Master Butcher. I also looked at the possibility that John married again and now have the marriage certificate of John Farrer and Louisa Walter - married 1 Aug 1858. John's address is given as Preston Street, Liverpool, but his occupation is given as Bird Dealer not Butcher. His father is shown as Samuel Farrer, Butcher. I can't find a Samuel Farrer on the censuses that fit with the dates. I still haven't found a marriage for John and Bridget so I'm beginning to think they didn't actually marry. |

Was his dad still alive on wedding certificate? |

The marriage certificate doesn't say 'deceased' so I'm guessing he was still alive in 1858. It does seem to fit with the family from Pudsey but how can I be sure. |

Just had another look at the marriage certificate and it states John as a bachelor and Louisa as a spinster, so maybe not the right family??? |

If he didn't originally marry Bridget, then maybe he would have said he was unmarried and that is how it was written. |

You might be right there Mary, didn't think of that. The certificate is difficult to read but it looks like Alice Stirrup and William Jones or James (his mark). |

Just checked freebmd and an Alice Stirrup married a William Jones in 1859 so I guess the witness above was William Jones. |
