Any further feedback, Dorothy?

Flick

Flick Report 21 Jul 2010 16:19

So please explain where the name Awcock has sprung from.....

You originally referred to Gwen's mother as Elsie May Awcock.........was the name MAY on the birth cert?

Also please say when Elsie died..........and under what name.

Do you know the names of Gwen's siblings? What surname(s) did they have?

Dorothy

Dorothy Report 20 Jul 2010 14:54

Sorry, called away yesterday and at work now so just a quick one.

Gwen's birth cert shows her as Tester to Elsie Tester with no father named.

Lineham is not a known name. Elsie's relationships/marriages were Burtwell, Walker, Pearce and possibly Smitherman

The Ticehurst district birth is Elsie M ...........I've checked the image

This looks likely to be the birth of the Elsie on 1911 cnesus

Does Gwen have her own birth cert?

It would be interesting to know exactly what info it contains

Can't see the 1910 one in 1911....but there is ONE Elsie Awcock.....................

I deleted the marriage info when I realised it was already on page one..............

Check back to see the names of the males, then see that the 1911 info matches.

MMN = mother's maiden name.

This is the birth registration to which I referred........you could have found it yourself on freebmd

Births Sep 1913 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Awcock Elsie M Whitmore Steyning 2b 447

There is, however, one other..............

Births Dec 1910 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AWCOCK Elsie [MW_] Ticehurst 2b 88

This would be more feasible for someone giving birth in 1927.........and it's in the right county

I'll see if I can find her in 1911

Dorothy

Dorothy Report 19 Jul 2010 17:49

What is MMN Whitmore? Elsie was extremely young when she had Gwen but it was nearer her death when we realised just how young. Story goes that it was one of the gentry so Elsie was packed off to a home to give birth. That is probably why she resented Gwen.

Gwen always said that her mam was an Awcock and she just used Tester because she was unmarried.

What makes you think that this marriage is Rhoda jnr? Reginald and Florence are new names to me - although I admit to not having all of them.

And what did you say that the administrator did not like?

Flick Report 19 Jul 2010 17:32

Where did the surname AWCOCK come from with regard to Gwen's mother?

Gwen is registered as Tester, with MMN Tester

Dorothy

Dorothy Report 19 Jul 2010 17:29

Gwen was Elsie's child, the others - Doris, Rosina and Queenie - were Elsie's siblings.

I've looked on freebmd, and there's only one Elsie M Awcock...........born late 1913, but with MMN Whitmore

Gwen was born in 1927.............Elsie would have been only 13/14, if, as you suggest, she was born in 1913

Dorothy

Dorothy Report 19 Jul 2010 17:08

Thereby lays the problem. I believe Elsie was so I guess the rest were also but I keep drawing a blank.

Would the children have been registered as AWCOCK?

And in which years would they have been born?

Hiya

When I posted this thread I was not hopeful of any replies as I have posted a number over the years without any success so to have you two wonderful people coming back so quickly with so much info is absolutely terrific. I have been doing my family tree for a few years now and it is very much 'as and when' so I would have probably half-heartedly checked next weekend. However, Gael was kind enough to message me and it was then I found this wealth of information. So, Flick, please do not be so hard (or surprised) on those of us who do not return to check the replies straight away, and please do not stop posting replies as I, for one, am so appreciative of your time and effort.

I had already found a lot of this info but none of the names tied in with the ones I had gleaned from my 83 year old mother in law. That was until Gael came up with the marriage of Edward and Rhoda Tester.

My mother in law (Gwen) was illegitimate with a mother (Elsie May Awcock) who (on her death bed) said she had hated her all her life. Gwen certainly had a raw deal and was treated more like a slave than a daughter. As she was older than her siblings she had the responsibility of looking after them and had the belt buckle if they did anything wrong. Gwen’s siblings had a number of fathers who were around for a while so were a known quantity but Gwen was given the name Tester on her birth certificate and when she asked about her father and why Tester, her mother would say that she did not know who he was and Tester was just a name she made up as she was not married.

I am now confident that Rhoda Tester and Edward Awcock are the parents of Rhoda jnr so my next job is to find the link via Rhoda jnr to her children who include Elsie May (born in workhouse c1913) Doris, Rosina and Queenie.

Thanks to you both for all your help.

Regards
Dot

So Dorothy didn't return to check the replies.................why am I not surprised?
