Hi all

it was physio today, so I was out most of the day.

the weather is still quite mild here!

my daughter is now sick, and in hospital, so I may have to go over there.

we are in the last few days of s-i-l's life, I think

She is in no pain (well medicated), but she has not eaten for about 10 days, and is now asleep most of the time.

OH desperately wants to go to her Memorial, which will be held as soon after she dies as possible ................... but it looks as though I might not get there.

Nice one Jonesey..... :-D :-D

We revised our wills in the summer and yes, we did something like that with ours - in the event of one of us needing care. We also set up a trust fund for our daughter.

Had a lovely time, albeit too short, with the grandchildren this afternoon. They grow up so fast.................. but they are absolutely great. <3

Must go and get some beauty sleep........see you tomorrow....

Gin,

Sounds long overdue for a revision, that will must have been made during the last century. :-D

Gee

Gee Report 14 Jan 2014 16:56

You're not rushing to the front of the queue are you Mr Jones

:-0

We had our Will done when we were in our 30s, not had it updated but might need to think about it due to the two siblings I lost recently

Jonesey Report 14 Jan 2014 16:39

Just returned home from my solicitors having executed the latest version of my will. Through the years I have always prepared my own will which I have revised from time to time as circumstances altered always ensuring that it complied with the requirements of law, E.G. 2 witnesses to my signature, beneficiaries not eligible as witnesses ect. This year I spotted a newspaper article mentioning Will Aid a charity fund raising organisation so I investigated.

Basically Will Aid supports 9 different charities ranging from Christian Aid to Age Concern and the NSPCC to Sight Savers. Will Aid has enlisted the services of hundreds of solicitors throughout the UK who are prepared to effectively prepare wills free of charge during the month of November. Instead of paying the solicitor the client is asked to make a donation to Will Aid. The suggested amounts are £90 for a single will or £135 for a pair of "Mirrored" wills, both very reasonable.

In my case although my intended will content did not pose any particular problems it did highlight something that I was unaware of. The difference between being a Joint tenant as opposed to being a tenant in common. If a joint tenant you cannot bequeath your share in the property to anyone as on your death that share automatically passes to the other joint tenant(s). To be able to bequeath your share to someone else such as your children for example, the property deeds need to indicate that you are a tenant in common with the others whose name(s) appear on the deeds, not a joint tenant.

An advantage in passing your share to your children on your demise is that it not only ensures that your children receive their inheritance from you but also means that should your surviving spouse need to enter a care home before their demise the amount of their assets the local authority can obtain to meet care home charges is reduced. Another consideration is that the value of your surviving spouse's estate will be smaller thus reducing any death duties payable by their heirs.

Food for thought.
