An amazing amount of potatoes eaten by the Irish....all cooked in a variety of ways probably. :-S


So glad that the poor folk in Somerset are going to get some help at long last. Must be awful to be cut off like that. Mind you, compared to what is going on in some parts of the world.....then I guess we are very fortunate.

I have just checked on google about those potatoes...........

I know that is what the woman said - she was a Food Historian from Ireland.

There are many articles which agree with her statement - this is just one reference:

"Potatoes were the exclusive source of Vitamin C for the Irish pesantry, with the average adult eating 12-14 lbs of potatoes per day prior to the destruction of the crop due to blight in successive years, beginning in 1845."

Apart from eating all that food every day, how on earth did they manage to get it all home to cook? :-S

Considering that many families were quite large and there wouldn't be any cars about, just imagine the weight of all that shopping :-0 :-(

Thank you for the fried bread Dea...but I've gained a couple of pounds since December :-( Not surprising really what with Christmas and everything....

Your comment about listening to the radio programme has made me think about how much I used to love Saturday night theatre on the radio. We would all sit down and listen, and I'm sure it helped to improve my imaginative powers.... :-D


Watching Midsome Murders....only 2 bodies so far - probably 3 more to come! lol

Hi Gins, and everyone

we got back very late on Monday evening .................. after a long journey, that included missing our plane connection in Toronto. Fortunately, that was the fault of the airline and the airport combined (don't ask!), so they were responsible for re-scheduling us on the next flight.

Yesterday, we were all at sixes and sevenses ..................... but I think we're "normal" again.

Daughter is recovering nicely .................. she had abdominal surgery, and they are working on their marital problems that they hadn't told us about before :-(


We'll still worry, but I think things are going to work out.

I'm baffled.............

Just watched a programme which mentioned the importance of potatoes in the diet of Irish people.

Didn't quite catch everything but we are talking here about probably the 1830's 1840's, before the Potato blight struck.

Apparently the potato was the main source of food and people at that time were each consuming around 14lbs of potatoes per day !!! :-S

How on earth can someone eat 14lbs of potatoes per day ????? :-0 - they must have been HUGE !!! :-S

AND, if you take into account that many of those 'persons' were children, the adults must have been eating even more !!!

How much notice does JB take..............

He's on his ipad, I go into the kitchen, cooking and I start sneezing (about 18 times)

Sneezing all the way up stairs and come back down, with the snuffled nose, as you do

'You sound blocked up babes'.........he says

'Did you not hear me sneezing'

No!

They also phoned me a couple of months ago to ask if my 'service' alert had shown in the car............nope

They'll be telling me it needs washing next!

I got a letter from the Audi dealer a couple of weeks ago to let me know my car is due for an MOT..............it's not even a year old!
