well done on that thread!!

I discovered in a book some years ago that in certain socio-economic classes from about the 1840s to around 1900 ......... the father could/would expect one of his daughters (usually the eldest) to provide wifely comfort. Wife could be dead or still alive but possibly unwilling, didn't seem to matter.

Thye didn't see it as wrong, but as a duty of the daughter to the father.

But it does mean that the father could be fathering at least some of those illegitimate babies we see so often on censuses.

Have you not heard the Victorian joke - A village boy tells his father he wants to marry a certain village girl - his father says No

The son says " but Father she a virgin"

The father responds " Exactly son - if she is not good enough for her own family - she is not good enough for ours !!!

Rene

Gee Report 17 Jul 2010 22:00

Rene...dirty girl ;)

Gee

Gee Report 17 Jul 2010 22:07

And..I also read that the Victorians had 'husbandry' lessons...ewee

Mom and dad would send the daughter to another 'male' family member to learn....

Often it would be an uncle

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Jul 2010 22:10

I hadn't heard that one

I thought sons learnt from the household maids?

Gee

Gee Report 17 Jul 2010 22:15

may be it was the suggestion I made that what she was saying blackened all helpers as she did not name names, and might even be considered slanderous
