Thank you kindly.

Hi Cynthia,
I haven't actually sent her a pm but when I clicked on her name the usual boxes came up for me to type in. Are you not getting them at all or can you type it in and it won't send?

I got your PM fine Cyn,and have responded equally easily.

Thanks for that Dea - I eventually got through...too late to wake her up though!!! Don't know what happened at all.
Poor Fans must have very sore fingers.....she is forever tying them together because they get her into trouble.
I have such mixed feelings about some of the arguments on here and try to put myself in other's shoes before making a judgement.
I know from the last couple of years experience in sending my messages out, how much many people struggle in using this site. Not that that excuses any rudeness of course, but I sometimes wish there was a little more patience with newcomers.
I also wish the newcomers would make an effort to see how things work before they post.....but hey, I can't say much on that point!!!
Off to Tesco's later.....deep joy.

Hi All
Am home had dinner - showered and sitting on sofa -
The Danish Retina Saga - Part 2
Arrived at Granada at 08.00 - ( UGH) and were called in about 10.00 to see the ophthalmic consultant - entered room and saw 2 consultants and a surgeon - who all peered in to eye - and then telephoned for "students" to come
It is an University Hospital - who all peered into eye - some have difficulty seeing etc
At 11,00 ish we were asked to wait - eventually one of the consultants said Come with me
We went up two floors into the Ophthalmic Surgery Wards - I was frantically looking around for Laser sign or anything similar - nothing visible
And thought - Good grief they are going to operate - I will have to stay here with her ( In Spain when a person goes into hospital - someone has to stay with them 24 hours a day - they provide flop back chairs to sleep on - food etc - )
He says - Now we are going to l operate on Monday and plug the hole in the retina with a Gas Bubble - but she cannot fly for a month or maybe more -
I ask Can you not use Laser - No he says Laser cannot be used on a hole - It has to be plugged with the Gas Bubble
This I translate to her -
(whilst thinking Oh no I will have to look after her for a month - living in my house - when I have only known her 2 days )
So I ask - Could she fly now -- Yes he says - So I say Does she have to fly immediately - today or tomorrow -
He says No Saturday will be fine - If you had said not for 10 or 20 days time I would have said - it was not good
So I translate this all word for word to her . and she says She will fly home as arranged Saturday morning and go straight to the Hospital on Denmark
I ashed her several times Are you sure - She said Yes I would prefer to fly home with my husband on Saturday
So I tell the consultant - and he says . There would be no more risk - the hole may enlarge a little - but ( and he shrugged his shoulders - and looked at me) and said - It will make no difference to the outcome - and said Do not translate to her - Let them tell her in her country -
I do not know for sure . but I think he was meaning she had lost the sight in the eye - Not sure and do not know
I did not translate and did not voice any of my thoughts to her
He had someone type up all his diagnosis and gave all the copies to us - Finally asking one more time - Is she sure we cannot operate on Monday - I asked her again - She said No I fly to Denmark
We went and had coffee and food and drove back to village -- poor woman - hope I am wrong

Irene -- I'll hunt up the thread about No.1's retinal detachment in case it has anything useful in it.
A day or two isn't a huge problem. No.1 had apparently had tearing he didn't realize -- me, I inform myself about these things, not him, and I didn't twig to his symptoms earlier.
The sight can be lost if the surgery isn't done. It is classifed as an emergency because of that. But No.1 went from Saturday night until Sunday night even once we did get him to the emergency room, and his had gone on a while.
I understand her wanting to get home, especially as she'd be rather trapped if she had the surgery there, not being able to fly. I'd strongly suggest she call her own doctor right away and have him/her make arrangements for her to be seen as soon as she arrives. Especially since she's arriving on a weekend. Her doctor might be able to arrange surgery for her that day or the next, rather than her going to an ER on a Saturday (as we did).
No.1 was lucky, as it were, with the location of his tear -- in the upper part of his eye. So to keep the gas bubble pressed against the repair, he had to stay upright for a month (including sleeping). It is more common for people to have to stay face down. There are instructions on line, for instance, showing you how to sit with your face on your arm on a table in front of you. ;)
I think the doctor was saying it will make no difference to the outcome whether she has the surgery now or in a couple of says, it can be repaired.
No.1's surgeon was doing the informed-consent thing, the various risks involved, but after going down the list, he said: basically this is a no-brainer. You have the surgery now or you lose your eye. (It's not just your sight -- you literally lose your eye.)
Wish her well -- most times the surgery is sucessful, and she seems to be well aware of the urgent need for it.

Hi Renes,
Sorry - Just got back from taking grand-daughter home.
I have been wondering about you all day - You have really had a hard time haven't you?
It doesn't sound as if the outcome will be good for this lady but at least having you there with them will have helped her and her husband through a very difficult time.
Whenever I have dealt with similar situations , I find it is the 'partner' who needs most help and reassurance, once you have got the 'sick person' into hospital and being cared for you then have to spend time with the other one, sorting out what needs to be done and giving support At least this couple will be staying together and travelling home very soon.
You were right to translate as you did - Once they are back in their own Country with no language barriers and their family and friends around them it will be so much easier for them to get through whatever comes ahead.
If this lady has travel Insurance has she contacted the Insurance Company? - They may well want to arrange for her to be met at the Airport on her return and transported to the appropriate hospital who will have been informed in advance? - It would be worth doing this - they may even wish to arrange a 'special flight'. Either way, at least they would make some sort of arrangement to have her dealt with quickly on her return.
Try and have a rest, I'm sure you will be helping them out until they go home but don't wear yourself out !!
They are SO lucky you were there!!

Her doctor - as mine is here - is a General Practitioner - they have no authority with in the hospital - all he would do is - Say go the hospital --- as indeed Luis did yesterday -
This maybe somewhat different to Canada -
If I were her - I would go back to my own country and go immediately with all my paperwork to the nearest hospital to the airport - and take it from there
She cannot speak one word of Spanish -
I did read on line last night - about the same position for sometime - if I had to do it I would have done - of course
Although I did feel it somewhat strange that she had mentioned she would have stay here alone - she is with her husband, son, daughter in law and grandson - could not quite see why the husband could not stay - Mine would have done - I know for certain
Still I have done all I possible can - she has a hole in the base of the retina - and today could see "movements " thru the top of the eye -
from what I could gather - from the consultants and "students· - discussions - it is quite a large hole - but I really do not know
At this point I can only wish her the very best of luck on Saturday when she leaves -

Irene -- I mean her doctor back home. Call her own doctor back home -- and if ossible get the local doctor to fax the examination report to her doctor in Denmark -- and see whether he can set up the surgery before she gets home even.

She just has her Danish medical card - and the new Europe medical card ( the blue one ) it is identical to the ones OH and I had sent . from UK in April - ( We have the Spanish Medical card as well ) Nice to see it was accepted without question - at both hospitals - One EU system that works well
Her husband came today and as I could not leave her - I really could not see to him - although I did go to him a couple of times and bought him thru to clinical waiting room - illegally
Just could not be in two places at one time - I was also texting home to OH checking
Long difficult day

Actually faxing him it not a bad idea - they could do that from the internet cafe at the coast
Yes her doctor is also a GP - same system there as in UK and here -
But he may be able to get an appointment by faxing into hospital - he must know the ophthalmic consultants name
Will suggest in morning
Thank you ---

Take a break Renes and get some sleep.
If she doesn't have additional Travel Insurance which will cover this then Janey's suggestion is a VERY good one.
Tomorrow, when you are rested it would be a good idea to suggest to them that they phone their Doctor at home in Denmark, or get a relative at home to do this, so that things can be ready for her when she returns.
All my 'passengers' had additional medical Insurance so I used to liaise with the Insurance Company and fax the medical reports through then they would make the necessary arrangements to get the people home or to have them met at the airport and transported to hospital. That way, everything was 'in place' when they arrived home.
Don't think about it now but perhaps suggest it in the morning?
Hope OH is feeling better?
Look forward to seeing you at breakfast tomorrow - I think it is 'Ulster Fry' ???
Dea Xxx

A good job well done Renes. It must be dreadful to have this happen at any time never mind whilst you are in a strange country. That poor woman, it hardly bears thinking about.
Trust our Janey to come up with some really useful suggestions......mind you, it helps when you have had some experience of the same thing. Trouble is, she is now going to be an eggspurt on all things colonic too - but not before mealtime I hope!
Do let us know if you hear anything further won't you?
Just had a long saga from daughter who may have oral thrush....she has some stuff from the docs....I wonder if it is to do with the mouthguard she wears to prevent her grinding her teeth. Trouble is, when someone with AS starts talking, they can't stop.....they go on and on...and then she says her mouth is sore ..... so I told her to shut up then! How cruel is that from your own mother???
Going for a browse around before OH puts on a dvd of Foyle's war........where's Fans gorn?
