Jax

Glad to see that you have stopped gambling - what did you gamble on ¿

I always fancied playing poker on line - but nervous I might get hooked !!!

Think I go with FMP - as loads of people have Ancestry and as I dont know the sight time I found any entry - the thread would all be over . perhaps I should offer look ups for people who do not stay on line - time they get back a week later I may have found what they wanted

Fags is sufficient addition for me

I worked for betting shops on and off for 20 yrs.

Hope her"face fits"ok as it is very much like that in them ,I have worked for many of them over the years, but one in particular that rhymes with kill, and they are all pretty much the same, you have to be "one of the in crowd".
When I started climbing the ladder and became more outspoken I was "got rid of"through being reported for a misdemeanor that anyone else would have got a verbal warning for.
I was not the only one to be got rid of that way as well,a really good mate who was there for 30 yrs was "got rid of" in a similar way when he started to voice an opinion on certain things.

Its not what you know, its who you know as usual...

And Gin?

Mine is fags too used to be drinking aswell until I fell over, but now I fall over without a drink...still drink but know my limits now

Got addicted when I went to Palm Springs with the casinos then Vegas.
I was'nt a silly gambler but the money could have been put to a better use, never played the tables only the poker or roulette machines.
As I live near Southend there is a nice casino on the seafront popped in there one day when I was out of work and won £150 thought this is good, I will make a living from it....no it did'nt happen lol

Forgot to mention the young men aswell in my clubbing days lol

Daughter recons she is training for a managers job, but I think that maybe a load of bull. It would be nice if she could actually make a go of this job for once.
She was working in a pub up until last week, then she did live in one from the age of 4 -16 so i suppose that was going to happen. She would'nt go to college wanted to earn money (or sit on her backside) more like.
She has a huge overdraft and I am thinking of bailing her out, but it will be the last time as I am getting fed up with it now

FannyByGaslight Report 3 Sep 2010 16:21

You can bail me out if you like chucking it away Ja...x

You start as a trainee manager and it does not take long to qualify really now as its all computerised and no real brain needed.
I had to pass maths exams among others to be a manageress and was one of the first women to do so,in the good old days the bookies did not like WOMEN being in charge, and def no ethnic majorities.
I fought for a year for the right to be able to train as a manager and not just be a cashier.
Funny name seen on application form and you didnt even get an interview, but a polite note saying that there were no vacancies at the mo,dont call us we will call you type thing.
And that was only early 80s.

And Gins, when I worked in the bookies it was what I did...I settled...your bets.
No computers either...!

jax

jax Report 3 Sep 2010 16:40

Its a good job it is computerised these days, not sure if this daughter is that good with maths, not like her mum and younger sister.
I was a bank cashier for many years no computers then...loved it.
Also hated the computerised tills in pubs much better adding it up in your head as you went along.
Betting offices were not the place for women back then, I used to go once a year to put on an each way bet on the Derby when I worked in London...smokey places full of old men.

You're probably forgotten what you were talking about back there, but ... I think I have 58 people in my tree here at GR (the only tree-like object I own).

And half of them are the same people entered twice because of my ancestors' propensity for shifting names every so often ...

jax

jax Report 3 Sep 2010 17:10

I think we must have the same tree JC I have 58 too

Have more on my ancestry one although I have noticed someone copying mine but I did steal a photo of my grandparents from her.
I did a bit of digging around and found out that her grandfather was born out of wedlock and contacted her...she changed it but added "it may be him" huh I expect she still wants to carry on the line even though it looks like he did'nt have the same father going by his baptism record.

Cousin jax!?!

Hey, I found a cousin yesterday. A few months ago I'd PMed somebody from a tree search -- my grx4 grmother Mary Castle in Wiltshire is a mystery, but a Susannah Castle married in Mere 5 years after my Mary Castle did, so don't tell me they weren't sisters! This person has Susannah in her tree. I got no answer, so I got pushy yesterday and PMed her again. She was ever so glad I did and asked whether I'd found anything interesting in her tree, which of course I can't see, and hasn't actually told me how she descends from Susannah despite a few of my voluminous emails and replies from her -- but she seems nice. ;)

FBG, I had to read that thing sideways and I'm not sure what it's disproving .... hmm ... but I'm *sure* you're right.

Well, the post in that one certainly bears out your theory, jax.

Unless it's just somebody who's learned by example. ;)
