Without buying the certificate, you can't be sure that he was YOUR John Pike - there seems to be more than one born around the same time in the same place. Perhaps you should order that death certificate at the same time as you buy the marriage certificate. On the 1871 census Elizabeth describes herself as married rather than widowed but of course that doesn't mean that she wasn't widowed!

Root if that is his death then he was born in 1822/23. By looking at the census he was about the same age as Elizabeths father!! Does seem strange....................................

Also if they married in 1865 it was five years before they had a living child???????????????

Yes rootgather I thought this was my John's death certificate but I already have this death certificate and it says :

John Pike
Died: first dec 1870
age: 58
occupation: thatcher
there was an inquest into his death.
whereas on his sons (george william walter james) marriage certificate it states his father as John Pike deceased, occupation: brick maker.

Yes, I do think it is stange and a bit unusual for there to be such a huge difference in the ages of John and Elizabeth. I think that I suggested on an earlier posting that perhaps we have "skipped" a generation! I wonder now if John the Thatcher is George's grandfather and Elizabeth's father-in-law!

This looks like John the Thatcher in 1861 (looks like his father also John and a Thatcher is living with him) There is a James Pike, aged 45 years and also a Thatcher living right next door - so perhaps a brother?

I would say that that is the death certificate I have of John Pike JR.
I was told that Elizabeth sedgemore was his second wife. but if this was my john what would have happened to his children from the first marriage. I guess I am presuming his first wife would have died.

the death certificate doesn't have an address it just says Alphington, and the informant was a coroner for devon inquest held 5th dec 1870.

I am beginning to think this may be the wrong death certificate.

maybe I have been given a bum steer by william and john might not have died in 1870, but i do know that john had died before 12th july 1890 ass it says so on george's (sons) marriage certificate. But then why would George not be living with mother or father in 1881 census and only with mother in 1871 census?

I can't see a son named John for that John that died in 1870. His widow continued to live close by the James Pike (Thatcher and by 1881 Thatcher and Market Gardener). James had a son John but he seems tp have remained unmmarried as he is with his parents in 1881.

It is always possible that your John's parents split up when he was very young. I still come back to the fact that on the 1871 census Elizabeth still calls herself married rather than widowed which would suggest that John was still alive somewhere!

First census with a complete list of names was 1841.

marriage certificate says:

fathers name: John's - william pike, carrier, elizabeth's- james sedgemore, fisherman.
how do i now find out John's mother and if he had any siblings?
