Here's a nice one I just received - Carol posted on an ancient thread and as it was such an unusual name I had to have a nosey!!!

Holy cow!!!!.I live in Canada,it's 4.40 a.m. & I couldn;t sleep so I checked the computer! Thankyou so much,my direct anscestor Karl Mal. moved to London from Bohemia,a little later his broyher, Frederick Joined him.I was only given info about Karl& his direct link to my grandfather.WWhen I wake up properly,I will write this all down, and put it on my tree.I have only been on the computer for 3 months,at66,and learn as I go.I have never typed before so it's two new things!.Once again thankyou so much.Carol.

I have once or twice recieved help on this site, and do really appreciate it. Having said that I am not good at following threads and 'back tracking' so it's all a bit 'hit and miss'.

Please, everyone, do continue to share your vast knowledge it is sooooo helpful, and sometimes the simplest answer can take you huge steps forward (or backwards as the case may be)

many thank to ALL helpers

Hi Lesley, this has been suggested to Genes. However, I remember Janey C. once saying something about having a facility where you could choose whether or not you wanted to receive notification of replies to threads as it may drive you nuts. I suppose for those of us who are on and off here regularly I can understand that. I think its probably clearer and more obvious guidelines to board usage which is needed. Cx

Hi, Cynthia, youre probably right, I have been using genes for a couple or more years now and still find it difficult to follow, but I'll carry on regardless. i just know how important it is that we keep track once we have posted but sometimes admittedly (not often) missed replies as I have had to go to work etc etc...but I am truly grateful for all the assistance i have had...........Thanks Lesley.

Hi C,

I put my hands up..... guilty as charged.

I promise to add to threads were I have received Pm's from now on.

The work you do o here is vital for many newcomers and without you they wouldn't know how to use the boards, so please keep up with your excellent work.

I posted athread in 2009 and recieved a positive reply today. I stopped looking at the message some time ago but because Anneof greengables advised the person to contact me directly lo and behold I have info that I have been looking for ages.
So NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!! especially with people like Anne watching over us

I often add PM,s to a thread if the info given isnt sensitive, and advise the writer that i am going to do it. I will also advise them to answer on the thread rather than click on a name as this only sends a PM
I have also to added to threads that PMing has been happening and results found, or the info found had been acknowledged, so others arent left in mid air , so to speak.

Just to say I think I have been showing my appreciation to you, unless there is another Cynthia; but I have been trying to thank people individually. Trouble is there are so many places to get into, I think i'm just finding my way around now and beginning to understand the different ways of contacting and being contacted.
Bit of a minefield if you're not used to it.

Regards J. PS If I dont get round to always saying thanks I do appreciate the time people take to reply.

AoGG.....an angel? Of course you are. It's the long white nightie that gives the game away!!

oops.....just getting the polish for that halo :))

Shirley, thanks for that, it helps if I know the poster has at least seen the work done for them.

I now realise I'm not as stupid as I first thought with all this message and contact stuff, as it seems to me reading other messages as there are people just as confused as i've been and its a very comforting thought. For all that, I can't understand why people would be rude and ungrateful, after all they don't have to use the site or take peoples advice. To all those who've helped me I'm one very thankful person. Keep on doing what you do best is my advice, I just hope nobody asks me to help them find their way around this damn minefield. Regards J

Good one, Cynthia ..................... of course, it *was* my idea !!!

I've tried to do it in the past. Glad you're publicizing it, because when I added to a thread "so-and-so has replied by PM with thanks" or some such, it always just kind of looked like me patting myself on the back. ;)

Sometimes they were just posters who I figured weren't gonna get the hang of the boards anytime soon, so the page-long directions for how to find this and do that, to post in the thread, just weren't worth it, and I'd just mention for them in the thread that they'd been gracious by PM.

To head off the nasties, you could add a line to your form letter mentioning that other readers can't tell when PMs have been sent in reply to things in threads, so people don't know whether to keep trying to help or everything has been sorted - ?

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 12 Jun 2010 09:22

Good point Janey, I'll do that,

and.............I will give you full credit for the above :)))

What a good thread.

I too try to help as I have been very fortunate in receiving some excellent help from brill members.

When I have received a PM I have add the info to the thread stating it has been sent by PM and have asked the sender to add all further info to the thread to help those trying to help.

Sometimes though, the PM is so vague I haven't a clue what the sender is on about so haven't been able to update the thread.

It's also true that sometimes the written word does not come across in the way it was meant, and this has been reflected in replies as certain comments have been read in the wrong context.

Also I think we are all a little guilty at times of not realising that some people do have difficulty in working our way around this site. What is simple for us to understand can be a little difficult for others. Not everyone has been using a computer for years, my mum now has her own laptop and has only just learnt how to switch it on and off. (A lot of lessons needed I think). She just keeps saying it's a lot harder for us old uns to pick things up.

Please keep up the brilliant work you fab members do. We really are very grateful.

I understand what you are saying Cathy. If any of the message is of a sensitive nature or the people could still be living I wouldn't add the info. I once received 3 updates from the same member and each time | asked her to add the info to the thread explaining why it was best she put it there, but it fell on deaf ears.

Cynthia Report 12 Jun 2010 17:17

Hi Cathy et al. I send a note out to anyone who hasn't responded to info found for them within c24hrs. I point them to the FAQs section so that they can see how to find and return to their thread.

If, however, they do send you a pm instead of replying on the thread, you don't need to put the contents of the pm on the thread for my benefit, just that you have received one. Then I and others will know that at least the poster has seen the replies.

I'll pm Mary to see what help she needs - she may be inundated with advice by now!!!

Thanks.

I c&p a pm sent to me IF it adds information to help find whoever or whatever we are searching for.

as when someone has been asked if they know birthdate, death date, father's name, do you ahve the marriage certificate, if so what does it say, etc etc

no point just sending the information to me when several people are looking and need that information!
