because my cousin was lucky enough to know our granparents, and he used to tell him that his name was leek and that moses and martha took him in and he took their name.. radley

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 26 May 2010 21:21

Leek could have been a middle name given to him because of a family connection .... most commonly, it is mother's or grandmother's maiden name

which is why I was trying to find the marriages of Henry's parents or grandparents.

It could also refer to a godparent.

It would be rare for it to refer to his birth name

and in fact, if it did, then it is far more likely that in later life he would have dropped the Radley and reverted to Leek

I'm afraid this may well be one of those family stories that has no basis in truth ..... may be there was a Henry Radley and a Henry Leek who were related ...... and the story has got confused over the years.

It may well be that your new cousin has been unwittingly following the wrong family.

but I must also ask why you think that this family line is the one to follow to find out if your daughter has an inherited illness?

There are 3 more lines to consider in her family tree.

oh are you sure of that

Rambling

Rambling Report 26 May 2010 21:03

Ruth, no it wouldn't confirm that I'm afraid, lots of middle names are just dropped... in any case the Henry Leek is still with his parents when Henry Radley is elsewhere ( i think , getting confused )

Ruth

Ruth Report 26 May 2010 20:59

henry is listed on a census as henry leek radley, then later as just henry radley, which would confirm that moses and martha adopted him

or to get the death certs of grandparents to see if it gives any clues... is it possible for your doctor to get your father's medical history? I don't know how that works I'm afraid.

Rambling

Rambling Report 26 May 2010 20:56

So that is definite,Ruth, but to get to where you need to be medical history wise, I doubt that going back further will help to be honest, because whatever it is may not have been recognised then in any case. I'm sorry that doesn't sound very helpful. Whatever the Leek connection is, I think it is too distant to be any help in the genetic illness sense.....

you need any children and grandchildren of your father's siblings, which I presume as you have spoken to a cousin, you have already...

Ruth, the main thing is to try and find living relatives on both sides that might know about medical conditions in family.. so do you have a death certificate for your father first of all?

ChristineinPortugal

Don't apologise Ruth, right so we know from the census below that John Radley's parents were Martha and Moses...

we'll work from that definite.
