By the By for your information Mary Ann Hardy was the cousin of Thomas Hardy (author). So Thomas Hardy is my cousin 4x removed.
Mary Ann's father was John Hardy know as the Black Sheep of the family in a number of Thomas Hardy biographies! I come from the wrong side of the family.

If you mean Georges military paperwork, do I don't. I know from his Death Cert in 1878 we was a groom by then (no longer army) and died of TB.

I will investigate that marriage you found which lists Mary Ann.

Anything more you can find will be much appreciated.
thanks
Bob

Hi wayne/Tracey,
Before i start i do have a thread it under pat subject birth certificate. I am desperate to find my birth certificate of my grand-father, but have had no luck so far. he died in 1956 born 1901.02 in abergavenny monmouthshire , i have to certificates for him marriage and death. His wedding cert states his name is leonard miles otherwise anstey, father john miles, he had for step-brother/sister named anstey. Mother louisa miles was married to tom anstey in 1891 census its spelt enstey. In the 1911 census they live in tudor st abergavenny, it states leonard was a miles , son of louisa and john aged 9 and it also states john and louisa had been married for nine years. Louisa maiden name was jones born in raglan 1862, stated in 1891 census but differs over the years. I cant find her either. I have trie registry offices ,but no luck! Any ideas where i can go next.

Regards,

Pat

Sadly, they all lied back then!

I and numerous people here have certs that have lies all over them, i have several certs which state wife of, when infact they were never married.

I even have one who implied they were married on all birth certs and even gave the amount of years on the 1911 census.... they were not however married as her first husband was alive and well and caring for the 3 previous children she abandoned!

I shall have a look at the military marriages for you.

Do you have George's paperwork, if they were married it will have the details (or at least should have) within the paperwork.

Robert,

Have you made enquiries on this marriage?

Marriages Jun 1868
Hardy Mary Ann Dorchester 5a 650
Richards Robert Dorchester 5a 650

Marriages are always listed as 2 sets of couples, this marriage has a couple missing, so it could be you have the male from 1 couple and the female from another.... in your case Mary Ann Hardy.

It's most def worth a shot.

Dear Tracey,
Many thanks for this information.
It's true they maybe never married but the reason I think they did is that I have a copy of Ellen's BC and Mary Ann who registered her in the local church and it says she is the wife of George Jones. If they did not marry would it say that as the minister would probably know them and know if they were married or not (thats my logic anyway!)

I do also wonder if they married in the Army Barracks in Dorchester and that is why they are harder to find. I have tried looking for the Dorchester Barracks records but no joy online.
You are my last hope!

Hi Robert,

I have looked at a few tree's on Ancestry and all are missing the 1891 census for Mary Ann Jones, so here it is.

1891 RG number: RG12 Piece: 1653 Folio: 5 Page: 4
Reg. District: Dorchester Sub District: Dorchester
Address: Cuckolds Row, Fordington, Dorchester County: Dorsetshire
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JONES, Mary A Head Widow F 49 1842 Laundress Dorchester Dorsetshire
JONES, Eliza Daughter Single F 16 1875 Laundress Blandford Dorsetshire
JONES, Rebecca Daughter F 9 1882 Scholar Dorchester Dorsetshire

Still looking for the marriage. How can you be sure they did marry? Some couples never actually 'got round' to marrying !

Dear Tracey,
I posted this earlier as a thread but no joy. Could you please take a look and see if you can find anything......

I am still stuck trying to find the marriage of Mary Ann Hardy and George Jones. Help Please.

From previous help this is what I know:-

My Great-grandmother, Ellen Jones in born in Dorchester in 1868 to George Jones (Occupation Groom and also Driver in the Royal Horse Artillery) and Mary Ann Hardy.

I have census records for them in 1871 and then in later census's after George died in 1878 -
George JONES; Groom; 43; Saint Peter; Apr 13th 1878

So I have hit a brick wall with the marriage of George and Mary Ann. Looked everywhere. Mary Ann Hardy was born in 1846 in Dorchester to John and Sarah. ( I would also like to find a death records for Mary Ann to tie up loose ends.) So I would say the marriage of George and Mary is going to be early 1860s and I would have thought George would have traveled not Mary Ann. I know from the 1871 census that George was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire about mid 1830s.

Also found this on a Dorchester website:
Burial Dorchester: The Infant Daughter Of JONES; George Jones, soldier; 1 Day; Holy Trinity; Sep 6th 1865

Certainly makes it all pointless doesn't it. I have one such sticking point on a great grandfather by the name of Rowles. Census say he was born in Witney (varying dates but around 1843). On his marriage Certe says his father's name is Wiggins. Loads of searches, incorrect Certificate bought after doing checks on possible parents names on GRO. Came up blank on every one. Know he was living with a Margaret Rowles in 1851 who had married a Thos. Wiggins the previous year but no John Rowles with a Wiggins father nor with a Margaret mother so I've given up. Just have to accept the fact that I'll never know.

I'm off to drop back in on the Fancy Dress Birthday Party on the "Tips Board". Great fun.

It wasn't.... but still it applies i suppose.

I agree, altho sometimes people add these trees together, then when it comes to the finer details (see my other rant) they are uncaring...

I'm almost at the point of shouting, you cared enought to add them, and possibly bask in your family's glory at the wonderment of how far back you go..... obviously completely missing the point that your very existance means you 'go back' some time.... just where?

Alot of people are more bothered about how many people they can get in their tree rather than the actual people within it.

I had a fellow the other day who wouldn't accept a base child and was hell bend on finding any possible father and wanting to DNA test any current descendants !!!

I mean how in the world would you start that convo??..... I think your wonderful Gfather boinked my Gmother and i want a blood test from you to prove it. I know what my second word would be, and thats OFF !!!

I have many base born (or at least unfathered by name) children, just accept the reasoning your ancestor wanted the name balnk and move on!

You cannot possible go a witch hunt for possible victims!

Sigh

Not sure if your last post was meant for me Tracey. If it was the answer is I'm afraid "No". No e-mail received after you sent him my address.

You just cannot help some people can you??

I understand your "rant". Very frustrating. I try to double check things - have been advised to do so by more than one person.

I'm ignorant about gedcoms and from what Wendy says sounds like a good thing too.

Wendy Report 29 May 2010 12:21

Very apt rant Tracey.
As you know, I traced the Fishies back to 1660, using a relatives data.
Wasn't until I started to fill in the wives names I realised they couldn't possibly have been born then.
Had I not said something, true birthdates wouldn't have been known, and false information passed on.
As it turned out..and here's a little warning to everyone..the gedcom she used moved dates around.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 29 May 2010 11:52

Nope the Hmmmm, was frustration is people just copying what they find from someone else, times 4 and then not bother to do anything else for themselves....

Time after time you look at tree's and see people have just copied and pasted the things other people have posted..... including things like (unknown location) maybe Norfolk..... and then every tree has the exact same thing on it.....

At some point wouldn't at least 1 person think, hmmmm, something isn't right here, i'm not going to be lazy, i'm gonna get off my ass and actually look at what i'm pasting...

Rant over!

Hi Tracey

Have studied your findings and just to see if I could turn anything else up I tried familysearch site. Seems Hector C died 1959 in Lismore and Melva S died 1944 Sydney. Assume that as she came up when I searched against White she remained unmarried.

Productive lot that family I must say.

Regards
Jeanie

Edit: Earlier you said:- There is a tree on Ancestry, however the tree has no details on Edward except parents listed as Alexander White & Maria, again no details for the parents (hmmm). Presume the hmmm means you think they are mistaken about the parenthood?
