Emma,
Thank you so very much - looks very much like the right family for George. I have just had a quick look at the map and Renton is just above Cardross and not far from Glasgow. I can now continue my research and see if I can find exactly when George emigrated.
My warmest thanks for your generous help.

Lyne,
There wasn't such a thing as adoption back then - Adoption wasn't recognised until 1930 but I had the same trouble as you are having as my gran was handed over when she was around 6 weeks old - no adoption papers were signed and the only thing we knew was her mothers name - which seemed to be the most popular name around that time (was also my grans birth name).
I've ha d a look for a birth for an Alexander Orr and an Alexander Buchanan and can't find anything about him. I've also had a look on Ancestry and no-one on there seems to have him either.
Illegitimate children are usually registered only under the mother's name although the father's name may be on the birth record.
Sorry I couldn't be much help - I have looked through all the Alexander Buchanan and Alexander Orr births in Edinburgh and none seem to match.

Is there any chance you have any more information on him as Fleming is such a popular name - I have looked for a marriage of a James Fleming and Annie Lennon and can't seem to find anything anywhere in Scotland

Jean,
Not sure if you have this .. but I find it's easier to go back before you go forward ..
9 February 1907 St Pelors? Church, Partick After Publication according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church Bernard Greenan - Iron Roofer (Bachelor) 27 Years 1 Dock Street, Glasgow Father - Patrick Greenan - Stevedore (deceased) Margaret Greenam m/s Russell (deceased) Annie McLuskey - P____ St_____ Machinist - (Spinster) 24 Years 26 Eastvale Place, Glasgow Father - Henry McLuskey - Stevedire Mother - Annie McLuskey m/s Wood PARTICK - LANARK
The births are going to be too recent to look up online but you can see names and years .. there there is one that is obvious but the rest are really ranged ,,
Margaret Russell Greenam - 1908 - ANDERSON - GLASGOW
I know it's not exactly what you asked for but because of the dates it needs to be done in Edinburgh.

Emma,
Thank you again, I do have the marriage, as you say the birth for Margaret does look as if it might be a daughter, and of course any births would have to be quite recent, Thanks for your time, regards jean
