Looking for relatives of John Farrell

Claire Report 10 Apr 2010 16:13

I am looking for any relatives of the following people Elizabeth Mary Farrell born March 1888 Belfast NI, John Farrell born abt 1890 unknown location in Ireland, Frederick Matthew Farrell born 19th December 1893 Nantwich, Cheshire, Edward William Farrell born 1895 Nantwich, Cheshire and Thomas Herbert Farrell born 24th April 1899 Belfast, NI.

Their father was Peter Farrell (Also known as Patrick) born either in Haddington, Scotland according to his military records or Edgeworthstown, Co Longford according to his Cheshire Police records. Peter served with the 5th Dragoon Guards from 1885 until 1897. He was placed on army reserve April 1892 and joined Cheshire Police force in May 1892. Peter married Elizabeth Hartfield in March 1888 at St Anne's C of I Cathedral even though he states his religion as Roman catholic.

Peter had two brothers that I know of and probably more that I don't know about. There was William Farrell and John Farrell. John was younger by about 5 years. Peter was born about 1867 and on his marriage certificate his father is listed as Matthew Farrell. On his miltary records his fathers address is given as 9 St Marys Street, Edinborough but have found nothing so far in the Scottish census or bmd's.

Eliza Hartfield is on the Belfast 1911 census as a widow (her religion is given as C of I so I assume this was a mixed marriage) and according to 1901 street directories is listed as living on her own. I have several sources that state that Peter may have re-enlisted in the army when he returned to Belfast. I have one death cert for the Boer War but no first name is stated so can not be 100% sure. Also haven't been able to find a death registered in Belfast so the Boer war death maybe correct.

Eliza has been listed as Elizabeth Hartfield, Hatfield, Horsefield and Harfield. On her marriage cert its written as Hartfield and her father is listed as John Hartfield occupation soldier. Her surname is also given as Hartfield in the Cheshire Police records and again as Hartfield on one of the childrens birth certificates which has been altered twenty years after it was registered by my Gt grandmother Alice Farrell who was born sometime after 1891, somewhere in England!

I'm hoping someone can help me with this or at least some kind soul may have Army muster rolls for the 5th Dragoon Guards for between 1885 and 1897. Peter's service number is 2741.
