If they went to the States through New York, try Ellisisland.com . It helps if you know the name of the ship they travelled on

Just had a look through my tree for G R Tomlinson - think it must be J E (Jane Elizabeth, nee Oddy, who was her aunt). Very odd that she did not name her father, who did not die until 1932, as her nearest relative.

There were clearly some strange family dynamics here though, as her parents were living apart in 1901 and Laura was living with another aunt rather than with either of her parents.

Maureen, that is EXACTLY what I have just scribbled into my notes - great minds etc! A sort of double-barrelled surname, but not quite so posh ...

OK-I was able to see the 1920 through Heritage Quest.
1920 Oddy Walter F Age 22 born Eng. in Alexander,Morgan Co. Illinois with wife Edna (23) and 4month old daughter Mildred. He's a farm hand.
Interestingly, the families on either side are FOSTERs. I wonder if that was Edna's maiden name and he took it instead of Harry???

Oh! I didn't mean I was glad that you're having a problem, Maureen. Just meant I was relieved that I wasn't having another "senior moment".

On the Ellis island site, Laura lists as her nearest relative or friend from country she came from as G.R. Tomlinson, Somerset Rd., Pudsey. She's going to join Newham Oddy, Alexander?, Moreton?, Illinois.

I'm having problems, too, with the 1920 census, Maureen. I was trying to double-check something I found yesterday but it's not there today. Thought I was having another "senior moment". Glad to hear someone else is having a problem.

I am also interested that Newham said (when he immigrated into the US) that he was going to stay with his brother Edward - he didn't HAVE a brother Edward!

I suppose this was something to do with some kind of "sponsorship" - maybe you had to have a definite destination in order to prevent people just becoming hobos? Though, looking at Newham's path across the States, that is exactly what he DID do!

Choccy - that 1910 census is brilliant, because she was boarding with her future in-laws! Later that year she married their son Herbert Lorenzo Jackson. Now I find myself wondering whether she met and married him because she was their lodger, or whether she was lodging with them because she was about to marry him? We may never know!
