Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 22:07

The Louisa Bennett born Wellington Dec 1868
appears in the 1871 Census with parents Richard & Margaret Bennett.
My Lucy's father was called John so this cannot be the correct one, I cannot find this family in the 1881 census.
any more suggestions PLEASE!!!!

Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 18:52

Yes Lucy is buried in Shrewsbury Cemetery in an unpurchased grave with 2 other people, no headstone, only a vase that my parents purchased when we found the grave.
Just because Lucy died in Wellington does not mean she was born there that was where the poor house was at that time.
I still cannot understand why she was Lucy on her daughters birth certificate and Lucy on her death certificate.

Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 18:47

I think I would be inclined to get this birth cert

Births Dec 1868 (>99%)

BENNETT Louisa Wellington, Sh. 6a 788

but just as another thought, do you know where Lucy is buried? I was just thinking that other members of the family might be buried in the same graveyard, which might give a clue?

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 18:37

Lucy Shotton died 12 Aug. 1940 at 18 1/2 Holyhead Rd. Wellington Salop (which was the poor house ) she died of a Cerebral Haemorrhage she was living at 134 Frankwell Shrewsbury

We've also got to bear in mind that all births were not registered as it wasn't compulsory at that date.

The Louise Bennet found by Rambling Rose could be a possibility as she was in the same area. Lucy says she was born Lyth Hill on one census and that is the Condover area.

Sandra I wonder if the burial record might have an exact dob on it ? it is the one in Wellington ? 1940 ...

Rambling

Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 18:18

I think you can probably discount the birth cert of Louisa in Bridgenorth as there is a possible marriage for her in 1899

Rambling

Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 17:40

I am trying to eliminate the others...Loiusa born 1867 has a father John who is a farm labourer...

Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 17:37

On her marriage certificate for July 1895 she is 27 years old On her death certificate August 1940 she is 74 years old. neither of these tally with Lucys birth in 1867

Rambling

Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 17:30

right does it give Lucy's age on the marriage cert?

we have her as 39 in 1901 and only 43 in 1911 !

working on that ... births for an L Bennett between 1860 and 1868 only these are within striking distance really

?

Births Sep 1865 (>99%)

No I do not have a birth cert for Lucy, which one should I 'go' for Lucy or Louisa, I thought Lucy was the one but now I'm not sure because if I go for her its her family that moved to B/ham and Yes the mother of Annie was called LUCY.

Rambling

Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 17:16

Sandra stop right there lol :))

first of all , taking this one step at a time...you know that Annie was the illigitimate dau of 'Lucy' becaus you have the birth cert...

so this is them in 1901

1901 England Census
about William Shotton
Name: William Shotton
Age: 45
Estimated birth year: abt 1856
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Lucy

ED, institution, or vessel: 7
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 20
Household Members: Name Age
William Shotton 45
Lucy Shotton 39
Annie Bennett 6

you know that 'Lucy' was not called that but Louisa ( often misheard and mistranscribed as Louise sobear that in mind) her father was John a labourer.

so far so good... now the one thing you need is Louisa/Lucy's birth cert which i take it you don't have?

Sandra

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 16:56

All I know - my mother Mary Ellen Burgwin 1915 daughter of Leonard Burgwin(1874) & Annie (1894) Annie was the illigitimate dau of Lucy Bennett; Lucy age 27married William Shotton age 34 on 1 July1895 at Shrewsbury Reg. Office and her father recorded as John Bennett - labourer, his father recorded as Samuel Shotton (deceased) both signed with a X and she was listed as Louisa (cannot find any record of a Lucy Bennett marrying a Wiliam Shotton anywhere) signed in the presence of Fred McGliston & Gertrude Shotton, can only find record of a cousin Gertrude in tthe census forms
By church records I assumed she was the daughter of John & Martha Bennett living at Simpsons Sq. Shrewsbury.
I can only find 2 births in Shropshire for 1867 Lucy Bennett Shrewsbury Feb 1867 & Louisa Bennett o.n.d. 1867 Bridgnorth, in the 1871 census this Louisa had a father called John but I can find no record of them in 1881 census
When I look at it this way I know very little - where do I go from here.? help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rambling

Rambling Report 31 Mar 2010 16:47

Let's just confirm - whatever else, these are two different people. One is single, one is married, they live in different places and died in different places in different years!
Lots of "differents" there but kind of illustrates the point?

MarionfromScotland

MarionfromScotland Report 31 Mar 2010 16:31

Re the X for not being able to write. I once heard that sometimes even if they could write it was assumed they couldnt.
Now just say she couldnt write..said her name was Lucy and the registrar or whoever asked if it was Lousia, she might have just said yes.
Could even be the accent.
I've also got somebody in two places on census night.

Not much help in finding what you are looking for.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 31 Mar 2010 16:13

But you might not have found your Bennetts at all!! The family in1911 is indeed the family on the other census reports but you do not know they are yours. Why do you think they are?

There are several Lucy Bennetts with father John in Shropshire, never mind the Louisa's.
The baptism you have found is not necessarily your Lucy.

Right, shall we go back to basics? What do you actually know? Forget the B'ham family for a minute. I am thinking it is:

"Lucy" married William Shotton but was recorded as Louisa

Her father was John Bennett

She was born in Shropshire about 1865

Sandra Report 31 Mar 2010 16:08

I'm getting more puzzled as we go on - why was she baptised Lucy and on her death certificate she was Lucy.

The family who moved to Birmingham have all the names of the family who lived in Shrewsbury also all the children including Lucy were baptised in Shrewsbury.
What do you suggest I do try to locate Lucy start at the end and work backwards?
I know she married William Shotton and the details on the 1901 & 1911 census are correct I have still to locate the Death of William Shotton, on the marriage certificate her father is John Bennett, Labourer when he was in fact a Bricklayer the place of residence at time of marriage given as Bayston Hill which is a suburb of Shrewsbury. When Lucy married she signed with a
X but the person I have been corresponding with re Bennett family tells me that when her sister Emily married in 1897 she signed her name.
If the Birmingham family are nothing to do with 'my' Lucy what happened to my Bennetts after 1891? I cannot find any mention of the whole famiily.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 31 Mar 2010 15:38

Christine, meant to say - if you look on 1901 & 1911 previous page the Louise who married William Shotton does indeed seem to call herself Lucy. But I'm thinking maybe she used Lucy as a short version of Louisa? The year of marriage fits too of course.
Don't see a Louisa Shotton death in Shropshire so the Lucy death there could well be her.
