Hi

MI's...monumental inscriptions from headstones. You might be lucky and find a family member by looking at the MI's from graveyards in the area you think they could be.
I have found a few things by doing this.family members I never knew existed.
Library might have a people directory too. Well worth popping in and asking what they have thay might help you.
They usually go by surname so anything that sounds like Lucy/louise/Louisa

Sandra Report 1 Apr 2010 18:23

Thank you, but she was buried in a unpurchased grave, I found her grave over 20 years ago, no one in the family knew where she was buried, and I managed to find it (2 graves away from her daughter who died in 1936 (having her 13th baby), also in an unpurchased grave) my mother always told me that 'Granny Shotton' did not approve of her daughter having such a large family, she having only 2 children of her own and did not visit the family very often even though they only lived about 2 miles away from each other. I have attended her grave ever since my parents died, there is no headstone.
I feel like I have had a bereavement everything I thought I knew about my ancestor's was not correct and now I am having such difficulty in tracing her or her family.I will go to the local records office tomorrow and see if they can help me, not that I really know what I am looking for.

You never know they might come up with something in the library. If you try when its not too busy they will be able to help you more.

The family on the 1871 with Louise were living in Church Preen and she was born Cardington. Maybe they will be able to help you at the records office or library.

Will they be open tomorrow as it's good Friday?

Maybe closed now till Tues.
Unless you live quite near Sandra, you could email them and ask what records they have before you go in.

Print out part of your tree with your missing names dates, to give you something to look at while there.

Sandra, please excuse me if again I have missed something - there is such a lot of info on this thread now. Just wondering who the informant was for Lucy's death?
Sorry this has taken such a turn - just shows what surprises there can be in this game, both good and otherwise. But keep on searching, it's early days yet.
Best wishes

Sandra Report 2 Apr 2010 08:26

The informant was J S Rabman, Occupier 181/2 Holyhead Rd. Wellington Salop; which was the work house at that time. Under occupation it reads 'of 134 Frankwell Shrewsbury widow of William Shotton Farm Labourer'
Please don't tell me it's early days yet I feel as though I have been through the mill; as my Grandmother was illegitimate I decided to go though her mothers line and traced them back several generations - what a waste of time.

I am so disappointed, even though I rang the local records and research library yesterday and the gentleman assured me that they would be open today (Good Friday) and I have got all my relevant paperwork together, I decided to go on the website and just make sure they were open, NO they are closed until next Wednesday how many more disappointments can I have?
Wishing you all Gods Blessings for Easter Time.

Can anyone tell me how to access Parish Records through a web site?

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 2 Apr 2010 14:36

I found this on Google

http://www.faulkes.co.uk/lookup/salop.htm

There's also Familysearch but have checked there and there isn't a baptism, only the one with John and Martha as parents.

You could maybe try Rootschat, they have boards for every county and it's free to join.

You may also find this useful about the workhouse.

Sorry to butt in here, but have you seen the death cert for the Lucy who died in Birmingham. I only ask because Yardley Green was the fever hospital & is where Heartlands Hospital is now. They mainly dealt with TB cases, but don´t think there was a graveyard. That would have been Yardley cemetery which is a couple of miles away in Acocks Green.
The fact that "your" Lucy died in Shropshire makes me suspect that she never left there & that the other Lucy is a red herring.

Sandra Report 2 Apr 2010 14:55

yes Marion I now accept that my Lucy died in Shrewsbury and the 'other' Lucy was not mine.
It would be a lot easier if I could find 'my' Lucy's birth I would have something to go on then.

Do you think if I put another thread asking if anyone has info on Lucy Bennett 1867 that may help?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 2 Apr 2010 16:52

Sandra, I don't think that will help as it will be the same people seeing your new thread. Have you already tried looking for common ancestors in other peoples' trees?
The only other things I can think of right now are - have you found William in 1891? And looked at the addresses they gave when they married? Just thinking you could "look around" for Lucy nearby??

EDIT I can see someone called mark who has a matching William.

Sandra Report 2 Apr 2010 17:38

!891 William was a lodger at Ensden Village Montford Shropshire. The only Louisa Bennett I can find in 1891 is living in Yorkshire but she was born in Shrewsbury Shropshire.
They both gave the address of Bayston Hill on their marriage certificate, that is a very small village on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.
How do I get in touch with Mark?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 2 Apr 2010 17:50

Click on "search trees" above. Fill in William's details and search. When you see Mark just click on his name to send a message.

Have had a look at that village and I see a Lyth Hill Rd. which would tie in nicely with her 1911 birthplace. Need to think!

Only 2 more thoughts.
See if someone with FMP might be able to do a street search 1891 looking for Barratts Lyth Hill/Bayston Hill.
Have you considered joining the Shropshire FHS? It's only £7 and they would be best able to advise re. parish registers etc.

What does FMP stand for and how do I get in touch with someone?
I will have to join SFH
Pleased to see you are sticking with me!!!
