I must say Catherine, i don't know how you found this information but it had me close to tears when i was reading it last night. To read a full account of what happened amazed me and couldn't believe that Nicholas was listed on there.
Many thanks for finding this

Thought this may also be of interest. It is taken from a day to day account of the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment in World War 1 and the battle of Flers-Courcelettes in which Nicholas Hunter died:-
26th/27th SEPTEMBER. Owing to working parties getting lost the trenches were not dug. The Boch trenches were to have been siezed at 4 a.m and this was cancelled. The 4th Yorks were in Prue Trench and Starfish line. At 11 p.m the 4th and 5th Yorks were ordered to attack trenches in conjunction with 1st Div and 5th D.L.I. and to work up Crescent Alley to junction of Trench. The attack took place but not with 1 Div, who "lost themselves". The 5th Yorks Bn lost direction and got into Crescent Alley which they held. The 4th Yorks got into the German trench with both wings "up in the air" and were driven out by a strong counter attack. The casualties were heavy with 2 Officers killed and 5 wounded and 8 other ranks killed and about 90 wounded. The Btn was ordered to Starfish Trench to reform.
It gives a list of those killed in this action, including:- 1854 Sgt Hunter Nicholas. Home at - 30 Gronelle Rd, Grangetown, Middlesbrough, N Yorks. Born Eston and enlisted Middlesbrough, N Yorks. Age 24.
The account of the battle is really interesting and there are lots of photos, so if you want to take a look the link is the following:-
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bandl.danby/001BnIndex.html
Battle of Flers-Courcelettes. begins on page 29. It gives a day to day account with the names of those lost so keep a hanky handy if you have a look!

Glad I had the right marriage then if the death was wrong. Could'nt carry on anymore as I had to go out but was just going to look at the war deaths when mother asked me for something and of course I had to do it right there and then. She will never wait! 86 years old!

A wee bit more detail on his regiment on the Ancestry.co.uk version of his death.
Name: Nicholas Hunter Birth Place: Eston, Yorks Residence: Normanby Death Date: 27 Sep 1916 Enlistment Location: Grangetown Rank: Private Regiment: Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) Battalion: 4th Battalion. Number: 1854 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: Aldershot
I think it does always bring sadness when we learn of the loss of all these young men. I have been very fortunate, that in all my many years researching my own family we lost none of our men. Those that went to war all came home safely. Then researching my husband's side, I found that his great Uncle emigrated before WW1 but enlisted with a Canadian Regiment and was killed in action just days before the war ended. Such a tragedy for his poor mother. She had 5 children 4 girls one of whom died on her 3rd. birthday. Her son was the youngest of her children but never knew his father as he died when she was 5 months pregnant with their only son.

Hi rootgather
it has certainly been great and your right about the team work!
I am just so grateful that everyone has chipped in and helped find her. It actually brought a lump to my throat to discover that Nicholas died during the war.

This has been great and such a good example here of the team work of helpers, it just shows how everybody doing a bit can unravel things.
So just for good measure - here's that 1861 census with your Nicholas's dad as a baby. (I am going to resist looking for the connection to the other Nicholas, I don't want to spoil your fun finding the connection!)
1861
Name: Robert Hunter Age: 1 Estimated birth year: abt 1860 Relation: Son Father's Name: Nicholas Mother's Name: Margt Gender: Male Where born: Seaham, Durham, England Civil parish: Dawdon Town: Seaham Harbour County/Island: Durham Country: England Street Address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Easington Sub-registration district: Easington ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 593 Household Members: Name Age Nicholas Hunter 61 Margt Hunter 58 Elizth A Hunter 24 Barbara Hunter 22 Hannah Hunter 18 John Hunter 8 Robert Hunter 1 Thomas Hunter 2 Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3748; Folio: 112; Page: 56; GSU roll: 543181.
The actual image says he is the son of Nicholas but I think you'll agree that he looks more like the grandson!

This the marriage that MEl posted and it is the correct one.
England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915 about Florence Kirk Name: Florence Kirk Year of Registration: 1914 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec Spouse's Surname: Hunter District: Middlesbrough (1875-1968) County: Yorkshire - North Riding Volume: 9d Page: 1211
Nicholas Hunter
We just got off on the wrong track with the older Nicholas's death but I do think that he is probably an uncle to your Nicholas. Your Nicholas was named for his Grandfather or so it looks from his father Robert on the 1861 census (although I actually suspect the Nicholas that was listed as Robert's father is actually his Grandfather)
I just thought that it was more likely that poor Florrie was a war widow.

I found his death by looking on the Commonwealth Wargraves commission website (that was after I realised that the other Nicholas's wife Janet was still living at the time of Florences marriage).
You'll find his death entry here
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=794526
The marriage posted earlier will be the correct one and you can order it from the GRO (before April if you want it for £7 otherwise it will be £9.25)
