David Bingham Irish

The only clue I have to my birth father is that he was called David Bingham and was stationed near Southport in 1945. He was Irish (possibly from Wexford/Waterford). Can anyone give me ideas on how to research a) military without knowing the regiment b) Irish birth records. After 63 years it would be satisfying to know of him.
