Here I am again. Rootfinder- Did Ellen Hewitt give birth to Edith in 1881 when she was 20 years old and single, (so I presume Edith is recorded as Edith Hewitt) she then goes on to marry John Smart in 1882 there is an address of 41 Hanover Street St Helens Lancs.. Edith doesnt marry, but gives birth to my Dad Aubrey in oct. 1914 when she is 33 years old. !!!!!
This would seem logical. I have found a death for an Edith Hewitt recorded at St Helens Cemetary 18-2-1943 Did she never marry??? how can I check this out?? I would be grateful for any help thank youuuuuuuuuuuuu

Hi all
At last I have found an Edith Hewitt (32)she is on the 1901 census along with her husband Arthur E Hewitt(33) They have a son Arthur(5) they live at 77 Ashbourn Road Liverpool-Husband is a Superintendant Sewing Mechanic and he is an Employer. Could this be my Edith. Mother to Aubrey ? cos she would be 47 when she gave birth!!! or did they have a daughter Edith who is my dads birth mother. Can I beg some help= did they have other children-when did they marry and where-what was Ediths
maiden name. I suppose Edith could have had an affair, and my dad Aubrey could be the result. Any help would be great thanks

Its me again folks- I am now wondering if Ellen Hewitts brother John Hewitt dob 1859 got married and produced a child called Edith- cos I cannot find Ellen with a sister called Edith-is Edith her niece? John is on the 1881 census in windle st helens lancs along with Ellen and the rest of the family. Help would be appreciated( Edith is driving me mad!!!)

Hi Mary thanks for that- Sheet glass blower, not quite a "theatrical" then- I know Ime grasping at straws and we may never know my fathers,father, But with a name like Aubrey, it does sound very theatrical dont you think!! I often wonder if he was christened after his father(an act of defiance) by Edith. I am now back as far as 1821 with a marriage between John Hewitt and Margaret? Then we have Margaret now Hewitt being married to Thomas Ashall- 1869 I think they are both second marriages, but still no Edith Hewitt the little minx. thanks and regards Eileen

The only Edith Hewitt I have found in all my searches is a death recorded in St Helens 18-02-1943(86870) buried in St Helens Cemetary, which would mean she never married
I suppose the only way to check is to get her death cert.?
to see who registered the death.
The other thing that is a puzzle we have never known my fathers birth father, however I have traced on the 1891 census the smart family and along with the family members is a Robert Wilkinson age 18 who could he be?
Is there anyway of finding out his occupation. The family story is that the birth father was a "theatrical" what a mix up. Anyhow thanks for all your help. I will plod on

I am still on the quest, if anyone has the time to help out with any of the following I would be most grateful

I have a marriage Dec 1882 between John Smart DOB 1860 and Ellen Hewitt DOB 1861 reg. in St Helens there is an address 41 Hanover St. St Helens. I need to establish Ellen's background because I think she is the only link to Edith(my fathers birth mother)

I am also looking for Mary Smart (age 46).
I know she was on the 1881 census in Glasgow with her children but no husband? is she widowed?
As you can see one year later 1882 John Smart marries Ellen Hewitt in St Helens This is the only thing I can find with regard to a Hewitt Any help from all you very clever people would be much appreciated, with regards Eileen

Hi Eileen,

Yes I am still out here treading the GR boards (lol). You are correct, it is nice to learn that the help that one has given has been of some assistance. It is just a pity that Edith Hewitt is proving so elusive.

Your father was born in late 1914. Taking a broad view, Edith, unmarried but capable of child bearing would most probably have been between the ages of 15 and 35 when she conceived your father, probably towards the earlier end of that age range. If that was the case then she would most probably have been born 1879~1899.

Bearing those facts in mind there were a total of 22 Edith Hewitts within that age range recorded as residing in Lancashire at the time of the 1911 census. Regretably there was not one shown to be in the Prescot registration district and only one in the Warrington registration district. That one was living with her parents (No siblings showing) in Earlestown. Her parents state that they had been married for 17 years so I checked for their possible marriage just to see whether the wife might have been a Smart or a Skerry but no luck I'm afraid.

Although the parish records that you have been advised to check (Presumably for a baptism of your father) might reveal something I have my doubts that these would show an absent fathers name.

Even if she did not raise her son herself, trusting the Skerry family to undertake that task for her there may have been some financial arrangement between herself and the Skerry's. Another avenue that might be worth pursuing therefore would be to see whether your fathers mother sought an Order of Affiliation (Bastardy Bond) in order to get the childs father to contribute towards his sons upkeep. If a record does exist, if anywhere, it is likely to be in the petty court records for the district probably now stored at the local archive office.

Hi Jonesey, You still there? just a quick thank you for all your help. It has given me so much info. I have been trying to put it all together and a great deal of it is quite clear. However I still cannot place Edith Hewitt my fathers birth mother, I think she must have been born or lived in Warrington Lancs. and of course my dads birth father is not recorded on the birth cert. I have made contact with the family services office they suggest checking the parish register cos in some cases the father is listed in the records. Just thought I would update you, cos Ime sure you like to know outcomes when you are good enough to help novices like my self, best regards Eileen
