Find Ancestors

my grt grandad came to england approx 1912.He was born in ghana west africa known as the gold coast then.He came to britain with a friend called eugene brown they joined the british army.My grandads full name was john makinson davis,he met my grt grandma mary elizabeth sherratt who was from longton stoke on trent .My grt grandma became pregnant with his child Ada joan sherratt who was born in 1920 and her parents bought her up.John davis stayed in the stoke area he married but i dont know his wifes name or what year he married. He had a daughter and a son ,the son was disabled and died in childhood i dont know if he had any more children .My grt grandma stayed in touch with him and his family but when ada my grandma was a teenager its believed he went back to africa.Ive found possible marriage matches but when i contacted stoke register they said it was not him and need more information.So if anyone has any information of an africian called john davis who lived in the stoke area from 1912 i would be grateful
