Melody

I understand that you want to find out info about the 'Blythe' family and it can be so consuming that you get carried away.

But it's really not fair to the helpers on here to keep posting threads about the same people/family

There was lots of info on the other threads and now Catherine has spent her time repeating it for you

You have indeed as Julie states deleted the other threads but you missed this one http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1200678

I hate to refer to T&C but it is NOT allowed to post more than one thread about the same people

the work house was in hawes and in 1861 matthew became governor he left the work house in 1871, but then later returned and it says he became guardian at the aysgarth union workhouse, i have found him on the 1891 census but nothing after that, i found his wife on the 1901 census says she is widow, but on the article i found on google it says he was still on the board of gaurdians in 1907??

Catherine

Catherine Report 28 Jan 2010 13:09

The nearest I could see was the following:-

Deaths Dec 1911 (>99%)
Blyth Matthew 71 Aysgarth 9d 842

but it would make birth date 1841 and not 1831, so ?

Where was the workhouse?
and have you found him on 1911 census?

Melody

Melody Report 28 Jan 2010 12:05

Catherine

Catherine Report 26 Jan 2010 14:18

Birth/Christening, 1825 - 1845, Yorkshire, England, British Isles
Father: Richard Blythe, Mother: Nancy

1. ISABELLA BLYTH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 24 FEB 1842 Hawes, Yorkshire, England
Father: RICHARD BLYTH Mother: NANNY
2. JOHN BLYTH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 14 AUG 1825 Hawes, Yorkshire, England
Father: RICHARD BLYTH Mother: ANN
3. JOHN BLYTH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 23 AUG 1826 Hawes, Yorkshire, England
Father: RICHARD BLYTH Mother: ANN
4. MARY BLYTH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 06 NOV 1836 Hawes, Yorkshire, England
Father: RICHARD BLYTH Mother: NANNY

so Nanny is another name for Ann!

some of the dates do not seem to fit, but don't forget these are Christening dates and not birth dates. Sometimes children were christened years after their birth.

So did Richard marry twice:-
RICHARD BLYTH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 04 JUL 1835 Hawes, Yorkshire, England
Spouse: ANN THWAITE

No way of knowing who his father was, unless his name is on either his birth or marriage cert. As it looks as though he didn't marry, that only leaves his birth cert. Sometimes the father's name is noted on the birth cert. even if the child was illegitimate but don't hold out your hopes.

Melody

Thomas Shaw (1871 census) was born abt. 1857 so couldn't have been Mary's son as William was born about the same time. That, and the difference in age between him and the other children, is what made me think that Mary was probably the second wife of James Shaw. That's why I looked up the 1861 census to see who was the wife then.

It's interesting to see on 1871census that living four doors along the road was, Richard and Eliza Ann Blythe, so could well be a relative of Mary.

There are two other children on1861 census who do not appear on 1871, Ann William Shaw and Margaret Shaw.

Ann Wiliam is noted as being 7mths but this is her birth:-
Births Sep 1858 (>99%)
Shaw Ann William Askrigg 9d 442 which makes her 3yrs old.

and Margaret:-
Births Sep 1860 (>99%)
SHAW Margaret Askrigg 9d 461
so she would have been just a few months old.
Unfortunately it looks as though she died:-
Deaths Dec 1862 (>99%)
Shaw Margaret Askrigg 9d 359

and to round it off it looks as though Ann William Shaw was in service in 1871:-
Name: Ann Shaw
Age: 12
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Hawes, Yorkshire, England
Civil parish: Burton With Walden
Ecclesiastical parish: Aysgarth
Town: Burton With Walden
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England
Registration district: Aysgarth
Sub-registration district: Askrigg
ED, institution, or vessel: 8
Household schedule number: 12

Melody

Melody Report 25 Jan 2010 18:52

so that means that in the 1871 census mary was not the mother to all the children?

Catherine

Catherine Report 25 Jan 2010 18:40

and here's the marriage:-

Marriages Dec 1866 (>99%)
Blades John Askrigg 9d 1019
<<<<Blyth Mary Askrigg 9d 1019
<<<<SHAW James Askrigg 9d 1019
SHAW Mary Askrigg 9d 1019
