Hi Dee

Not sure what information you are seeking? Can't tell you more than you have without more info.

Do you know her maiden name?

My pleasure. Highly likley he came to Victoria for the goldrush. But highly unlikely he made his fortune from it!

Yes I saw on the news today that the area now under flood (up to 9 metres high, expected to get up to 9.4m) is the size of France & Germany combined! Certainly puts it in perspective.

And 40c is too hot for me too!!!

Cherilyn thanks so much for all that, he has been bugging me for ages. If it is him then he left his legal wife behind in Huddersfield (unless she came back on her own but I doubt it).

I agree about female names and also occupations. I know that many of mine had jobs but they are never mentioned on marriage certs.

We have seen the floods in east Australia on the TV here, they look very devastating.

Don't think I could put up with 40c, too hot for me.

Thanks and regards Jennifer

Okay he was buried at Ballarat New Cemetery on 26/6/1891. It says 'Open Ground, Not Known' for the location. More brick walls!

There may be clues on his death cert, but this would only be as good as the informant's knowledge. It is possible he and 'Mrs' Wallace were not actually married as well!

Go to https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=purchaseImage to order a pdf download of the certificate, I think it is A$17.50. The registration number is 4726.

Hope it is him! :)

Hi Jennifer, from a very hot Australia (the 40C part in the West, not the part that is currently flooded in the East)

Hm Valentine arrived with a Mrs Wallace aged 28, no given name dammit (why is it that the wives first names were not considered important?!)

There is a death in Ballarat in 1891 of a Valentine WALLACE, aged 65, which makes him born c1826 - seems to fit? Parent 'unknown', sadly. And can't see any chn born to them after 1855, which would have helped find who his wife was...grr.

Let me check Ballarat cemetery...

Happy new year Cherilyn from a very dreary and grey England.

Is it possible to find out anyhting more about this man who is on Victoria, Australia, Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists, 1839–1923 on Ancestry.

Name: Valentine Wallace
Estimated birth year: abt 1824
Age: 30
Arrival Date: Dec 1854
Arrival Port: Melbourne, Australia
Departure Port: Liverpool
Ship: Sultana
Nationality: English

My Valentine Wallis/Wallace disappeared c 1851/2. He married in 1847 to Mary Ann Deardon in Huddersfield Yorkshire. I have tracked her down to Leeds, Yorks in 1881 and 1891 and her death in 1898.

In 1881 she says she is married but I have never been able to find Valentine either alive or dead till I upgraded at Christmas and found the entry above. He would have been a couple of years older than the stated age and his occupation in Huddersfield was Stone Mason

Regards and thanks for your help, Jennifer

Cherilyn Report 11 Nov 2010 08:32

Hi Dee

There was an inquest into his death:

Surname: WEBSTER
Given Names: Leonard Owen
Year: 1975
Reference: 1360
Inq Date: 1975-3-17

But unfortunately it doesn't give a cause of death. At least you have an inquest date, though of course his death could have been many weeks prior.

Sorry I can't offer more on this couple.

Cheers
Cherilyn

Hi Cherilyn
Thank you very much for that, I will certainly try to get further and follow up your tips re Sarah.
It may be I am barking up the wrong tree re the convict Charles Tanner but will keep trying.
Since my last contact with you I have found out that Elizabeth Seaton's brother William joined the army in UK in 1841 and spent his first 4 and a half years in Tasmania with the 51st Foot regiment!!
Thanks again.
