Ha thanks Chris - yes things have been a bit quiet on here for a while! Of course I did take on more hours at work so tend to be on here a bit less too :)

Thanks for the link (and your kind words), I'll check it out!

Hi Elizabeth

Sorry I was a bit late to the party on this one.

Yes it would seem this is a different Patrick as father's name is quite different on th marriage and this info would surely have come from Patrick himself.

Hello Kevin

Thank you very much for the information you have given - I really appreciate it :-)

The Farrelly-Smith Tree on Ancestry is mine !

Because both lines originate in "Ireland" they are proving a challenge but my mother was sure it was Armagh

I think this is not "my" Patrick Farrelly as his father was named Nicholas and I have him with the family in 1861 and 1871 - of course it could be him giving a different name !

Many thanks

Hi there
Just saw you post
Penong is a farming area on the west cost of South Australia, about 50km west of Ceduna. It would be wheat (marginal farming in some areas) and sheep.
There are some on-line records on the farming areas but not detailed.

Look at the marriage details to check if there is a connection to your family as James FARRELLY is patricks father on the Marriage data

There are a couple of private trees in Ancestry, you could contact them?

FARRELLY.— In loving remembrance of
out dear father, who passed away at the
Penong Memorial Hospital on the 13th
October, 1928.
The shock was sudden, the blow severe,
We little thought that death was near.
Only those who have lost are able to
tell
The pain there is In not saying farewell.
When the shades of night are falling
And we are sitting all alone.
There always comes the longing.

Hello Cherilyn

Where should I look for info relating to "Penong South Australia"
Does it come under a State ?

I have Patrick Farrelly born 1858 Staffordshire {grandfathers brother} who I have in the 1861 and 1871 census' but not after.

Two trees on Ancestry have him ? on them

Emigrating in 1879 to Penong
Marrying in 1892 in Glenelg
Dying in 1928 in Penong

They do not appear to have sources except for the marriage

Where would I find immigration info on the Patrick Farrelly who travelled in 1879 to see if he is "mine" ?

Any help appreciated :-)

If you go to http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/ ,there is a 'Ticket of Leave' for a Henry Saddler from the same ship - only problem it shows there were 2 of them on the same ship, one from Bedford, one from Somerset. This may be an error in transcription.

All the convicts on the Mt Stuart Elphinstone were exiles and became free men as soon as they disembarked in Brisbane. The Tickets of Leave were all written out prior to the ship leaving England and handed to the convicts as they left the ship.

Sorry I did look into this at the time but must have forgotten to reply!

No luck - without knowing which state of Australia he settled in it is very difficult. No clear leads I'm afraid.

Sorry again :-(

Cherilyn
Not sure of what page as it was so long ago. I will give the info again.
Alexander Spence born 1856. Parents were Alexander Spence and Mary Jane Hamilton. He was born in Milltown Raphoe Co Donegal and later lived in Beltony Raphoe Co Donegal, a short distant from Milltown. I can find him in the 1901 census but not in the 1911. I have court records up to 1914 and I believe it was him. Usually drunk was the charge. On his army records, it mentioned he had taken to drink!
Now it looks like he left Ireland 1914/5
I was told he had a sheep station. He was about 58 or 59 when he left, albeit he had his date of birth 1860 on the census and army papers. This is a strange age to leave. I know his mother died 1915 He was not married.
I was told that when he died, money was sent back to Ireland. I don't know how much, when and who all received it. Alexander was one of eleven.
If he made a Will that would be a help. The names of his siblings are,
David, Elizabeth, Thomas, John, Mary Jane, William, James, Ellen, Anne(died age 15) and Henry
Kind regards
Aspen :-D

Aspen Report 19 Nov 2015 22:40

Hello Cherilyn
I'm still looking for information for Alexander Spence. I think I have more information for him when he left Ireland. It looks like he was still here in 1914 according to court records. He may have left approx 1915. I know that leaves him a fairly old man to emigrate giving that he was born 1856 :-S

Aspen
