Hi Sheila, so does the 1871 census show a birthplace for her? Could be a good clue?

Sheila Report 14 Jul 2017 16:10

After William Ashton and Maria J Rowan married in 1869 in Sydney N.S.W they went to Uk on census 1n 1871 at Aldershot she was known sometimes as Jane or Moriale and seems to have been a midwife. Looking again it seems she married again in 1918 to a Charles Chadwick, cannot find the deaths for either Jane (Maria J) or Charles. I was doing this research for a relative and she was interested in the Rowan side as she thinks she has Irish ancestors . However, I think I will give up as there are lots of people with the Ashton name looking for family and she does not want to get involved. Thanks for all your trouble, nice to have contacted you again. as you are always helpful

Cherilyn Report 14 Jul 2017 10:37

Sheila a tree online has this Mary ROWAN marrying in 1869 but to a Peter HELD (Grafton district, reg 2418). Death for Mary HELD, daughter of Denis & Mary (may be informant error) in 1933, Granville district (reg 1051).

So I think this may be the wrong Rowan line.

Not sure if the 1869 cert would tell you her father's name. Do you know when/where she died? Was it in NZ?

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 14 Jul 2017 10:23

Hello again Sheila :-)

So the birth in 1848 is for Mary ROWAN to Denis and Bridget.

Marriage for Denis ROWAN to Bridget GAVIN in 1845.

Possible death as Dennis ROWAN son of Dennis & Margaret, in 1896 in Casino district. A Dennis ROWAN arrived in NSW in 1845 aged 26 aboard 'Herald'.

And three deaths for a Bridget ROWAN - 1853 (aged 45), 1899 and 1915.

Hi Cherilyn you have helped me before, I have been looking into a relatives family and found he married a Maria J Rowan he was William Ashton in 1869 New South Wales Sydney, I think I have foun d her birth 1848? N.S.W Sydney parents Denis Rowan and Bridget and Their marraige in 1845 Sydney N.S.W I think they came from Ireland. I wonder if you could check this information for me especially the parents Denis Rowan and Bridget Gavin. William Ashton Was sent to N.Z and was in the Waikato and West Coast Campaign 1863/1866 (This was a surprise as my brother went to live in Waikato and his wife was a Maori, I must email my newphew to send my some more information about it) Sheila

Margaret Report 3 Nov 2016 16:06

Hi Cherilyn - I wonder if you could help at all please ? I have a Leslie Reddick and wife Beatrice. They emigrated to Australia from England but unfortunately I do not know when. I imagine it to be in the early 1950's on the cheap £10 passage. As they lived in Melbourne area I imagine they arrived in Melbourne. The 'ask a librarian service' were not able to propvide me with information as to when or where they arrived but did say that In 1999 they lived 3 Long Street, Langwaren, Melbourne and in 2008 45 Richard Drive, Langwaran, Melbourne. Beatrice died 25 Feb 2000 and Leslie 21 Sept 2011. I do not know if they owned their properties or rented them. I have been unable to trace either a Will or Probate notice for them and I was wondering what the law is in Australia for folk who do not leave a will. Here in England, if there is no family any assets, savings etc. go to the State. Does the same thing happen in Aujstralia ? and what assets does one have to have to need to go to Probate. Here in England it is £10,000. I would be grateful for any information you could give.

Thanks Chris - sorry Sylvia, not much to go on. I can't see him in Australia but have not looked in detail at every state...there is every chance he was in Canada or somewhere else.

Can you find him on a outward shipping list to narrow his destination??

Hi

Yes I'm assuming!!
Janet was born in Manchester England her parents were Scottish and they moved back to Scotland after she was born. and she died in Scotland.
Think I'm going to have to go into his a bit more

Thank you

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 29 Oct 2016 05:35

Hi Sylvia

So they married in Scotland in 1852, and I read from your email that Janet died in Scotland?

Or was that in Australia? Was Janet Australian or Scottish?

Do you have any location in Australia please? Or are you assuming he went to Australia for the gold rush? It could also have been NZ, as the gold rush there started in the 1850-60s. There were also gold rushes in the USA and Canada in this period.
