Hi Margaret

I assume this was fairly recently (ie on the last 10 years)?

There are 2 J Tobin's in the Ballarat area in the telephone directory - www.whitepages.com.au/wp

One is in Alfredton and one in Wendouree.

Have a look and see what you think.

Alternatively contact the Army Reserve as I imagine this is what the notice would be in regard to.

8th/7th Battalion,
Royal Victoria Regiment,
Ranger Barracks,
Cnr Sturt St and Ring Rd
Ballarat VIC 3353

Hi John

The headstones may have children's names listed. Try a volunteer for Qld at www.raogk.org

From there you will need to try whitepages or place notices in newspapers for the area.

Good luck!

Hi Kym

I assume you are looking in the hope that she is still living?

Pretty tricky...

You could try the Salvation Army family tracing service (just google it), or ABC TV show 'Can We Help?' may be willing to do some research.

Good luck, sorry I can't offer more.

Hi Sally

Yes Thomas married Annie McSween in 1891 in Vic (reg 3632). He was born in London and she in Geelong, according to the reg, but I can't find her birth. She is not the one born in Alberton (dau of Kenneth & Mary). Most of the early McSWEENs were around Belfast (Warrnambool/Port Fairy), or Amherst/Maryborough. There is one who was near Ballarat, also a mining area - Angus & Mary (nee McNEIL), but the earliest birth for them is 1864.

Sadly both children died young.

Charles Wm DENLEY b. 1892 in Melbourne South (reg 34655), died in 1893 aged 13 months (reg 15354).

Henrietta b. 1899 in Melbourne South (reg 4642) died that same year, only days old (reg 2866).

There is a death for a Thos DENLEY in Brunswick in 1916 aged 54. About 5 years out but can't see any others.

Was Thos related to a Wm DENLEY, born London, who died in Victoria in 1863 aged 30? (reg 2248)

Do you know of any spelling variations?

Hi Jane

Sorry - I amlost missed your post completely!

I can't find a death for Olive. Do you know when her husband died?

Nor can I see her arrival.

Unless... this is a mistranscription of ROE for RAE?

11636/1917 ROE OLIVE R CLARICE MARRICKVILLE

Thanks for looking Cherilyn,

No - we don't really know when he died. In one of the letters she wrote she described very large bushfires so I wondered if maybe he was killed in one of the fires. I have found quite a few Alex Rae deaths but no way of knowing which might be him. If the 1917 one is her she certainly lived to a ripe old age - she was born in 1829 in Marylebone, London

Cheers,

Jane

looking for any marriage or death for a Julia Mary Phillips born 1876 in Ash-Next-Sandwich, Kent, England. I know she had a son on 9th October 1918 . The birth is registered in Woodend Melbourne. He grew up in childrens home before coming to live in England in 1933. I am led to believe that he was put there because his mother died but I have not been able to find any trace of her
