If he was a Carman, then 1911 that Tracy found is looking good!

Hi Sharon
I would like to ask again the question that Wayne/tracey asked which was how do you know that you have the right cert. I noticed that your mother in law was born in the same district of Brighton in 1938 as the Thomas Bertram Kershaw born in 1910. That seems a coincidence. -JLe

Sharon Report 5 Jan 2010 12:55

Thomas father on birth certificate shows him a a general carman, his parents are Samuel Johnson - 1862, Brentford, Middlesex & mother Catherine (Kate) Donovan - 1861 - Shadwell, London

Yes, Tracy I've just seen that.

I'm also beginning to think that the children may just have been adopted, but I'm not sure how to find adoptions!

Possible 1911 but wrong middles name:-

Catherine i had already edited my post, she declared 3 years married and 2 live births.

With her being a domestic in another household, i do wonder if the children were given up as they couldn't cope?

I'm still trying to find Thomas with the 2 children, i may find him with his family...

Sharon what is Thomas occupation on the birth cert?

I have found a Thomas Johnson married living with parents....He's a Carman born brentford. Sadly he's not required to fill in the marriage section.

Could mean that they were separated though?
The original should show if she had any children, living or dead.

Hmmm found this...

Warkworth House was the Brentford Poor Law Union Workhouse. On the same site was an additional building which was used as the Brentford Poor Law Union Workhouse Infirmary. The infirmary eventually did become the West Middlesex University Hospital which also later absorbed the workhouse buildings. However, up until 1932 the majority of births did not occur within the infirmary building but within the maternity ward of the workhouse. Sadly there are no surviving records from the maternity ward (or any part of the workhouse) for the period when your grandmother was born.

This was written in response to someone else's request for info on Warkworth House, on another Genealogy site.

The Bertram middle name could have been omitted off the BMD list.

EDIT: the 1911 states 3 years married and 2 live children born and 2 still alive.

I've been looking at the 1911 but can't find him yet.

The nearest remarriage I could find was this one, but wrong district:-
Marriages Sep 1919 (>99%)
Johnson Annie M Kershaw Manchester 8d 456
Kershaw Joseph T Johnson Manchester 8d 456

possibly Annie Maria?

Yes it could be a possibility that his mother remarried and that he could have been adopted. Are you able to check the 1911 census for me to see if he is on it.

Ok i know this may seem like a silly question....

How do you know you have the right cert?

We cannot find a birth for a Thomas Bertram Johnson 1910 at all on the BMD, and you know him as a Kershaw?

I know we are looking for the answer to the question as to how he got to Kershaw from Johnson, but how can you be sure you have his cert?

Catherine Report 5 Jan 2010 12:24

Could it be that his mother remarried and he was adopted by his new father?
