My great-grandfather was Charles Warnes of Norwich (b. c1845). He had three children, my maternal grandmother Alice Maud (b.1887), and two sons Harry (older, who migrated to Michigan USA possibly early 1920s?) and Arthur (youngest) who remained in Norwich. I am now stuck already because I can't remember Charles' wife's name. This is so exciting - wish I was retired then I could sit here all day! Thank you so much to anyone who may be able to help. Can't find a 'good fit' on census - do you have any more info on them - anything, no matter how small?
How did you get back to Alice Maud? - Do you have any certs?

Marilyn - folk were a bit remiss in not saying where they got stuff from. All the above censuses came from Ancestry, a subscription site, but you can register for free too, and do a free search of the 1881 census. (You can do a free search of any other census, too, but without a sub you won't get full details, and you certainly won't get to see the raw image.) You can also search 1881 at: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp (it's under search records - advanced search)
If you're lucky, and FreeCEN has transcribed the piece you're needing, you can also search at: http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
For Norfolk, there's only partial transcriptions of 1861(59%), 1871(18%) & 1991(54%) - to see what pieces are done, click on the county "details" link at: http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html (Walter Miller is easy to find in 1861).
For the GRO index, there's a mix of Ancestry and FreeBMD posted, but the info is identical. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl One can look up the marr in Norfolk of William Miller & Let* (that's what I would specify, as Letticia is a name prone to variant spellings). We get: Surname First name(s) District Vol Page Marriages Dec 1846 (>99%) Miller William Norwich 13 643
and we can click on the page # to see who else is mentioned on that page. Naturally, we'ld expect Wm's spouse, but in general, we only know there's at least one Letticia mentioned on the same page, and usually wouldn't know from the GRO index who wed whom.
The real purpose of the GRO index is to be able to specify which BMD cert you want to buy at:: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
If you give them the date = year + quarter & vol + page ref, it costs 7 GBP, (vs. 10 GBP without). NB date is date of registration, not date of the event.

My great-uncle Henry Warnes migrated to Michigan, USA, (I am guessing around early 1920s.) Is anyone able to point me in the direction of a website to help me find out when he left please? Many thanks.
