I don't think he had another name, as Maureen said it just says William Young on his marriage certificate, and it's just William Young on Henry's birth certificate as well.

Edit: Yes, a middle name would have been very handy for William or Thomas! Lol, yes the 'dead cowman' transcription is quite strange, and so is the fact the 'Henry' was transcribed as 'Mary', even though he is a son. The transcriber must have been having a bad day.

FannyByGaslight Report 29 Jan 2010 17:28

Or his sons birth cert ,well Lloyd hasnt said there was a middle name on there for him.
We really could have done with one too.

I don't think so-at least he didn't use it on his marriage cert..

I was just wondering if he had another name as well as the William.

LOL! Viv,and here I was thinking he was the live one and the cows were dead. Either way it conjures up quite an image!

Why are we doing this Mary?

I dont mean that rudely, but as in where are your thoughts going on this impossible mission?

But I still love the Dead cowman transcription.
Bleedin wallies,as if he could work if he was Dead !

I see what you mean,Maryb. No idea what he was going for there.

I have been looking at the 1911 original transcript for William Young and Jessie, what does the signature say.
Is it Mr William Young,if so the M in Mr doesn't look like the M he has done in the word Married at the side of his and Jessie's name, what do you think.

Ah thankyou, that explains alot. No wonder I couldn't find Vilette Place anywhere!

MaureeninNY

MaureeninNY Report 29 Jan 2010 02:28

Just for info,Lloyd, Villette Place was formerly Bronte Place.

Ok, so you could say I've pretty much hit a brick wall with this branch of the family tree! Before 1901 the Young's seem to vanish off the face of the earth. I hadn't even thought that he may have been born on an outgoing voyage, I had just assumed it was an incoming one. And the possibility William may not have been born a 'Young' really does complicate things.

It's getting a bit late (even for me!) so I'll probably continue tomorrow.

Many Thanks,
Lloyd

No William Young born at sea according to FMP - but there is one image where I can't see anyone called Young at all. Some poor blighters probably regretted being born at sea - they were named after the ship!

But of course he could have been born in his mother's maiden (or previous married) name and she married Thomas later. We don't really know where that might have been. We also don't know if they were on an outward voyage somewhere, so weren't in the UK on the censuses.

Haha, thanks for the help anyway! Looks like this one may be a bit of a challenge. I'll have to go to Kew and have a look at the births at sea registers and see if I can get any further.

Regarding the Shepherd family, I've managed to find the street they once lived in on the Charles Booth poverty map of London (Bronti Close, apparently it's a mix of poor and comfortable people). I can't find anything about Villette Place anywhere though.

Thanks again for all your help!

And it would seem to me that so do the others as not a peep has been heard from them, deserting rats that they are !>>;:))

Thanks alot, there are quite a few William Youngs with a father named Thomas Young around the London area so unfortunately I'm not sure which one (if any) is my ancestor. I have however found Jessie Shepherds family on there.

Thanks, and I'll see if I can find him on any censuses on Ancestry.com. They may have come from Ireland, but the other side of my family is Northern Irish and so I would have thought Henry (Henry's daughter-in-law's parents were Northern Irish) would have said if his family were Irish. Although maybe Henry didn't know.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 28 Jan 2010 11:26

As he says on 1911 that he was born "at sea" ,
(and upon further inspection of that original his age is very blurred so I am going with his 1876 age on marriage,)
As his father was a labourer I think they may have come from Ireland, but wherever they came from I would think they would be in England on 1881 census.
Struggling here but I will soldier on !
