Just had a look at marriag for Charles and Elizabeth.
At time of marriage, Charles' father, Francis, is recorded as general labourer. Mother,Elizabeth, is recorded as deceased.
Out of curiousity, where did you find Charles in England on the 1891 census.? (it will help me have a look on Ancestry)
Cheers

Thanks so much, Ellieathome.
This is indeed the family that I am following. It is only through having replied to a query on another site, that I found that there was a possibility of Charles having been born in England, and thus, the possibility, of his parents being married there too.
I had only really looked back to Charles and his wife Elizabeth, Their son, John Thomas married my late grandmother, therefore, in essence, becoming my mum's stepfather. All of mum's siblings are those of John Thomas , and my grandmother, Alice.
Have to say, I hadn't thought about the option of working away on the night in question. Don't suppose such a thing would have been noted. It was the fact that Eliza was recorded as Head , I guessed John Thomas was not about!
Thanks again.

I am interested in the above Charles Hildreth. He married ELIZABETH LANGFORD, in Dalziel Parish, Scotland, Jul 10 1891.
Through Ancestry, I have been directed to census entry for 1891, which has Charles, his parents Francis and Elizabeth, livng in England. I'll clarify where when I check.
What baffles me, is where Charles has gone in the 1901 census? I have wife , now Eliza, with her children, living in Holytown, Parish of Bothwell. Charles is not with them.
However, Charles and Elizabeth have a son, John Thomas, May 31 1903. On the birth certificate, Charles is given as"present", at birth.
At time of Charles marriage, and John Thomas' birth, Charles is recorded as being a puddler/puddler in iron works.
I will be greatful to any reply.
