I have just received the marriage certificate (dated December 1889) for Albert Worsdale and Elizabeth Evens and yes lancashireann, you were absolutely correct, her father is mentioned.

But also, they are down as Evens and NOT Evans as I first thought which may make a difference as far as searching for the marriage certificate for Joshua and Elizabeth is concerned.

Elizabeth's fathers details are David Evens (deceased) and he was a farmer. I am hoping with anticipation that someone may be able to help with any further details for either the Evens or the Evans family.

Many thanks in advance and Merry Christmas,

Russ

Hi,

After a year I think I have had a breakthrough with the parents of Joshua. They may be Joshua Evans born circa 1820 in Toddington and Mary Fleckney born 03/11/1816 also in Toddington.

This information came from Elaine on the board but she has no further information. In any case I would like to order the marriage certificate and was hoping someone on the board could find any more details.

Many thanks in advance,
Russ

Russell, That would mean that the Joshua in the 1861 census married at 17? Not impossible I know but maybe a bit unusual? Big age difference too between George and Mary which would normally indicate a second marriage?

Russell Report 28 Dec 2010 16:46

Thank you rootgatherer,

In between George and Mary I have Joshua b. c. 1849 and Naomi b. c. 1852 plus a Phoebi b. c. 1844 and David b. c. 1838. Unfortunately these came from someone elses tree and I don't know how they found these names.

I have looked on freebmd and have found and Elizabeth Evans 11a 981 and Joshua 11a 981 being married in Swansea in June 1874. These may be my gx2 grandfather and grandmother ie. the missing Joshua in the 1861 census and I may order the certificate. What does the 11a 981 mean....does this mean they married on the same day and at the same place? But if the parents are Joshua and Mary I may be on the right lines.

My gx2 grandfather and grandmother (Joshua Clark and Elizabeth Evans) have always put themselves as being born in Welshpool so I cant understand why if Joshua was actually born in Toddington.

This is driving me nuts,

Many thanks again,
Russ

Russell, I don't think that Joshua and Mary Fleckney are actually your family that's why I posted that census.

You need to work from what you know rather than someone else's tree.

The 11a is the volume number and the 981 is the page number - so that means that the marriages of these people are on the same page - it doesn't mean that they married each other.

Have you considered that as both Joshua and Elizabeth have the Clark as a middle name that perhaps Joshua was born a Clark and his mother re-married to a Mr. Evans?

Hope this helps!

are you positive that the Worsdale Evens marriage is yours?

Does it say Elizabeth formerly Evens previously (or lately) Evans ie giving 2 surnames - even if they were the same - as it would if she had been married twice - I assume Elizabeth was described as a widow

this may also be a daft question but just for confirmation I assume Elizabeth's father was also David a farmer on her marriage to Joshua?

edit - forget that last bit, I forgot you had not found that marriage

Thanks again rootgatherer and lancashireann,

It has never occurred to me that Joshua could have been born Clark! I do know that the 'Clarke' middle name was passed to the children. My gx2 uncle Charles has 'Charles Clarke Evans' on his gravestone.

I am almost certain (99.9%) that Elizabeth Evans married Albert Worsdale soon after Joshuas death and she is described as a widow on the marriage certificate.

Working from other trees is unfortunately all I have at the moment, I am having to see what is on them and then try to prove or disprove what they say.

Thanks again for your input and comments, it helps a lot,

Cheers,
Russ

could Joshua also have been known as John?

thanks lancashireAnn,

he has never been referred to as John in any documents that I know of, he was listed as Joshua even on his death certificate. But you really never know!

I have commissioned a friend to have a look for the relevent documents at the National Archives appertaining to his death (his foot/leg was crushed when he was hit by a train and he died a month after the accident) but I am doubtful we will find out more about his family - fingers crossed anyway!

Many thanks again for your continued help,
Russ

using N Wales BMD the above marriage took place at Berriew, St Beuno. Don'y know the area but assume not too far from Welshpool

Russell

Russell Report 1 Jan 2011 18:02

Thanks LancashireAnn,

Maybe I have dismissed this too quickly, Berriew is only about 5 miles from Welshpool. Is there a John and Elizabeth Evans living around Welshpool on the 1881 census, if so they are not my family as Joshua shows up in 1881. It may then be worth ordering their marriage cert?

I hope this makes sense,

Cheers again,
Russ

about 25 of them!!

Russell

Russell Report 1 Jan 2011 18:53

Thought there might be a few, it still may be worth ordering the marriage cert...an Evans marrying an Evans in Welshpool at that time can't be all that common!
