Hi Freewheel,

Yes - I think I shall have to 'bit the bullet' and order another cert - but I will ask for a check to see if she is the wife or widow of Stephen. Before I do that I may see if I have time to visit the archives again on Tuesday, armed with 1 or 2 strong contenders for possible deaths - I have also found one in 1904 which tallies - age wise!!!

If you buy the cert for Harriet, it will tell you if she was the 'wife' or 'widow' of ***********

With luck, she will be wife or widow of Stephen, which would at least give you more of an idea of time-scale, as far as HIS death is concerned.

If she's not the right one, of course, you'll be back to square one.

Sorry to be a Job's comforter!

I don't think they are actually ticks - more like marks on the adjoining page.

But if they did have disabilities, they would be specified in the column. No "PC" in those days - they told it like it was!

Sorry - that is the 1851 census!!

Hi Freewheel,

There is a tick at the side of her and her mother's entry on the original census page. Do you think that they had a disability?

Freewheel,

You have the correct Harriet - born Leicestershire between 1839-1840. Thank you, I hadnt gotten around to finding out more about her family .....yet!!

'Richardson' is his mother's maiden name.

Many, many thanks for your interest - I can REALLY use all the help I can get!!!!

Hi Freewheel,

No - I cant find him [or them] in 1871 either. His father was called Isaiah and he was a tailor. In 1871 [he died in 1879] his father was recorded as John Wood????? But I have checked the interment [found it by accident] and those who bought the grave were Stephen and his brother Alfred.

Cant find them either in 1861 - except his father Isaiah [recorded as Sarah] who is recorded as a lodger in Kettering, Northants. No record for the rest of the family, however!

Thank you for your 'to the point' answer to my question regarding GRO records. That is what I was asking - again you have hit the nail on the head!!

I'm sure you've got all this, but difference in her birthplace from that given in 1881 may prove helpful when trying to trace her/them

To answer your query about the GRO refs and the Archives............basically, you can't cross-refer.

The GRO refs apply ONLY to certs ordered from them - the archives do not use GRO refs.

The only info you could use would be the year, qtr and district..............

No mention of a second forename on the marriage record

Marriages Mar 1862 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mitchell Samuel Nottingham 7b 254
Rouse Harriet Nottingham 7b 254
Wood Stephen Nottingham 7b 254

I can't see them in 1871.......................have you found them?

Can't see Stephen in 1861 - his father is a lodger somewhere

Hi,

Yes - rootgatherer - that is my problem. You have hit the nail on the head!!

I will have to look into emigration more closely - but where can I find records that are relevant to the 1882+

Many thanks for your replies!!

So if the business never went bust,he sold his share for some reason.Money to emigrate perhaps?

rootgatherer Report 10 Dec 2009 09:03

Couldn't agree more Elaine, there is certainly a limit on how much to spend on certificates - especially if they are the wrong ones! The difficulty with this one is that so far, there is nothing to narrow down the timescale for his death. And there's no certainty that he used his middle name!

lainie39

lainie39 Report 9 Dec 2009 19:03

You see - my problem is - if she did die before Stephen, how will I ever be able to guess at his 'informer'?

It could cost me £40-50 in death certs!!!

Not that it is ALL about the money - but there is a limit!!

Elaine

Did you find Harriet (the one that you have found on Freebmd) on the cemetery records that you looked at? I think that you may well be going down the right line. If you find that Harriet on the cemetery records (which are usually easier searched if you have an approximate date of death), then you could contact the local authority (or whoever holds the full cemetery records) and find out if more details of the lair are available. Often this is the way to find out who is interred in a particular lair. If that is your Harriet, it is possible that her husband is also interred there. The date of internment would give you an approximate death date. Some local authorities charge a small fee for this service.

Hi Karen and ellieathome,

Thanks for your replies.

I didnt manage to find the correct Harriet last night - so I am still puzzled!! She may not have died!? Looking for both their deaths is just a long shot.

The business didnt go bust - it carried on after Stephen had left as a partner until about 1960!

I have looked on ancestry regarding emigration - but the records only go up to a certain date, so have had no luck!

However, I am still uncertain as to how you can apply the info from GRO to the archives. Is the answer - the only thing the records are useful for is guessing and ordering certs that may not be the relative searched for?

Many thanks

Elaine

You could order what you think is Harriet's and state husbands name as a safety guard.Still cost you £4 if wrong
