I won't ask a ladies' age - but my most 'devasting' birthday to date wasnt my 40th - but my 30th!!!

I was at home with 2 children [under the age of 5] and I had a real panic, feeling that life was passing me by!!! 40 - by comparison - although a significant 'land mark' age - didnt bother me half as much. The next one will have me reassessing my life though!!

I have to say, though, that the saying 'life begins at 40' is a total lie!!! It may have been relevant years ago, but not now!!!!

Elaine, 2 years difference is nothing. I have a "big one" coming up in 2012, but in the meantime I have to keep counting forwards from my birth year.

No - his date of birth [by my reckoning!] is 1839!!! I have no idea where the 1837 came from - maybe they really did lose track of how old they were - I know that I do. I was recently very pleasantly surprised to find out that I was a year younger than I thought I was - and at my age - it is VERY important [touchy age-with a BIG one coming up!!]

Yes - that is the correct census entry!! He is mysteriously 2 years older than he should be - and it is recorded that Geddington is in Nottinghamshire not Northamptonshire. Notice that Harriet's place of birth is Harby in Leics and not Colston Bassett Notts!!

This is the last record I can find of either of them [save his withdrawal from the partnership in 1882!]

His christeneing on family search is 1839, I have nothing for 1837.

Unfortunately, none of those 'Woods' fit in!!

I am also sorry to tell you that the East Bridgford 'Richardson's' cannot be connected to my Stephen Wood, as in 1881 Stephen and his wife Harriet are found in the census living on Caroline Street, parish of St Mary's in Nottingham. They have no children, recorded on the census, at this time.

Barbara has very cleverly found Harriet in 1871 [which was a mystery to me!] and I have found them on the 1881 census. It is really what happened to them both after that!!!

I have spent nearly all morning looking for Harriet in the 1891 census - and have had no result. I have already gone through this for Stephen!

Maybe the Martians DID get him!!!

No - not at all Ginny. I tried to search emigrants on Ancestry, but the records didnt go up to the sort of dates I was looking at. In fact, you reminded my that Familysearch and Ancestry both include US census'. I havent been able to find him on either before now - but then - I have usually been looking at the UK. So having reminded me, I have another avenue to try!!!

I have come to the conclusion that I have four outcomes here;

he died - but I cannot find a death record
he changed his name - but this will be difficult to find out
he emigrated - ??? I can check as I have said above - or
the Martians have taken him!!!! :-) lol

No, Stephen didnt have a brother called Edward - unfortunately - and none of the other names are associated with him. Forenames that are - are Isaiah, Rachel, Alfred, Alice and Rhoda. These are his parents and his siblings. Surnames of immediate family are Wood, Priest, Rouse and Wolfenden.

I was going to say, first of all, that it couldnt be him, as he is recorded on the 1881 census for Nottingham, England - but stranger things have happened.

What I have noticed whilst looking at the originals of each census page that a Stephen Wood [of about the right age] is included on - is the mis-transcribing. Now I know that some of the handwriting or copies of the census are difficult to read - but some of it is way off the mark! Another lesson to learn - not to believe the transcripts - but to check for yourself!

Your find does help very much, and gives me more food for thought!! I wonder why she went back to her parents? Did they separate? Did he go away for some reason? I will look at this all again.

I dont know how I overlooked her in the 1871 census - maybe I have been concentrating on him too much - sometimes I forget that it also pays to search for other family members. I thought I had but......... well, that is where these boards come into there own!!
