WOW.......I can hardly believe that we are getting to the bottom of this mystery that has been bugging me for so long......... Cant wait to see what you have found.......

Have a good evening

Susan :-)

Susan,,have a night off! ..I've got a whole sequence of stuff that virtually proves what I propsed.....but I'm off out now for a bit....

John Barton married rebecca and emma was their daughter..!!!!! no other possibility.........and the hampshire nonsense?????? looking at one of the \\census pages....EVERYBODY comes from Eling Hampshire!!!! including someoone from Scotland ..........its obviously either a corrupt file or a if the originals actually show this..then someone made one hell of a mistake!

I have family of both Rebecca Burton and John barton..full chapter and verse.. later!!

OMG never even considered that the birth cert could be wrong but its certainly a possibility.... Took it at face value, what an idiot :-S
You have obviously been at this family tree lark a lot longer than me so your little grey cells are better trained...

What you are saying certainly makes sense. This side of my family do tend to be known by names other than those they were baptised by they were an odd lot.......Thinking about it I have another family member but on a different line, her name was Jane but her marriage cert shows Jinnie so anything is possible.

Would really appreciate you looking for John Barton son of Jonathan. At the time of his sons marriage he was a labourer. Don't know if any connection but John and Rebecca's marriage was witnessed by Alfred and Lydia Jackson, maybe relatives of Rebecca's mother ? Just a thought that might help with tracing family
If you want copies of certs, send me PM with email address and I will send them.

Thanks
Susan

EDIT....Just digging through some papers with my research. Derek... it was suggested to me by a relative of an Ancestry member that Emma's parents were John and Rebecca but I dismissed it due to the birth cert saying Hannah. Was suggested John and Rebecca were both born in Derbyshire but moved to Hampshire after marriage and that children were born in Derbyshire but he couldn't confirm any more as it was not his tree. Was suggested siblings could be George 1859 Alice 1864 and Jonathan 1881. If this ties in with your findings then Rebecca must be correct.........Wasn't withholding any info from you as I really appreciate the time and effort you take but didn't consider it correct due to different name. Hope I have not caused too many problems.......Sorry

Susan...do not cut your throat!! but i think the unmentionable has just hit the fan!!
What would you say if i said forget HANNAH instead of Rebecca???

I know you have the birth certificate.....but they are not infallible..as i found yo my cost on at least three occasions that they got it wrong..

There is no evidence at all that a John Barton married a Hannah Burton..no record anywhere......the only appropriate birth for a |hannah burton is 29.04.1837 to John and sarah...........but there is no marriage for her.
The only marriage i can find for a John Barton married to a Hannah is of two 50 odd year olds with a large family crossing both sides of 1862.and no Emma.......

BUT......you seen Emma with a mother Rebecca on the 1871 census....but no father...........
How about this:_

REBECCA BURTON baptised 22.0.1840 at Ticknall (right area)..daughter of James and Sarah Burton........married John Barton 22.05.1859 (which we already know about)..but the certificate says Rebecca daughter of James.and John the son of Jonathan....this is from Civil registration........and looking in the same place over a five year plus or minus timescale..there is no marriage for hannah Burton...several John Bartons to hannah's..but no Burton.

If you think about it our combined grey matter, as brilliant as it is should be able to sort it......or at least agree something is wrong........I am now strongly of the opinion that its the \\birth |certificate.....

I'm going to dig deeper into John Barton son of Jonathan.....

Derek.

Thanks Derek...

I also think its best to forget Rebecca, she is just confusing the issue. Women ay !

Derek ..Are there any more details of the parents for the baptism in 1862. or any other children of John and Hannah
I guess its a pretty good chance that the couple came from the Etwall, Burnaston area.....

A marriage for Hannah and John would be wonderful and may give me something else to work on.........and of course there is still the mystery of the missing marriage for EMMA & WILLIAM BRIDGES which could solve the mystery by providing her fathers name. .........1911 census shows they had been married 30 years so suspect the event took place about 1881 if it ever did happen

Sorry to be such a pain.....Really must get the records myself...stop bothering you....

Susan

Hi Derek....Just received your update....I think you must be as confused as me now....
I am assuming the content relating to EMMA BARTON is for me and the rest for Jenny with the "Slack" problem. Really dont know how you keep up with this !! Patience of a saint.

I am glad you seem to agree with me that the Hampshire birth is a myth....
I just cant find any concrete evidence to confirm it either way.
I have a cert for an EMMA BARTON born 11 Dec 1861 Burnaston sub district Repton, which I believed may be the correct one. I assume this would be the same Emma baptised in Jan 1862 as shows her parents as JOHN BARTON AND HANNAH BARTON NEE BURTON.

Also got marriage cert for JOHN BARTON AND REBECCA BURTON Repton May 22 1859 but only gives her name as Rebecca. I suppose she could have a middle name, Hannah but its not given. Father James Burton employed as Collier

Have death cert for EMMA, wife of William. (If its the correct one) died 23 June 1922 in Cauldwell Repton.

Thanks for taking time to look, this is really driving me CRAZY and I cant let it go..........

Susan

Hello elizabeth....thanks for your contribution....we have moved on a long way since my thread was deleted.......I would be interested to hear anything you can contribute to my present discussions about the SLACK family..bearing in mind there are millions of them in Derbyshire...
It would be interesting if you were prepared to send me a PM and open up your tree for me....becasue the names are very familiar to me.

Derek Report 16 Apr 2012 15:53

Hi Susan.........Have been all the way round the huses!!..and i am now convinced that EMMA BARTON being born in Hampshire is a myth.....
1891 and 1901 repeat what must be an error............I have found her on 1871 born Burnaston..with mother Rebecca.....but have a baptism for her 12.01.1862 baptised Etwall..daughter of John and Hannah.....which leads me back to Hannah and Rebecca being the same person..particularly as Etwall is within walking distance along the A50 from Burnaston...which leaves us with John and Rebecca's marriage at Repton 22.05.1859....I'll sort it!!

EDIT......12.01.1862 is Emma' baptism....Civil registration dates are for births..........Etwall and \\burnaston are both in the repton sub-district of the Burton on Trent registration area........AND behold !! EMMA BARTON born January 1862 registered Burton on Trent.
The undeniable answer is to get the \birth certificate

Hello jenny..a revised bit of data.........WILLIAM SLACK baptised 26.04.1825 son of Griffin Slack and Sophia nee Wood was in fact born 19.10.1818 !!!!!!.......my copy of the parish records shows 1823..but Matlock tell me this is a mistranscription........so the census details are after all correct......when I get a niggle i don't let go....and it bothered me from the start....
I can't get anywhere with Griffin Slack except that his father was a William, so for the moment I'm going to concentrate on Joseph and Mary and Eleanor (Ellen) and assume (for the moment tha there is no connection between Elllen daughter of joseph and William son of Griffin, other than the marriage to Ann Clarke....later x

EDIT 17.16.........little poser for you......JOSEPH SLACK married MARY BIRCUMSHIRE at West hallam Derbys 22.08.1752.......is unikely to be the father of Eleanor(Ellen) 1778..pushing it a bit innit!!......have you missed a generation?????
Particularly as I have a Joseph 11.03.1758 son of jJoseph..and another one 1753 son of Joseph and Mary..either of whom could be elelens dad!!...........Just as well you have ne on your side!! lol...I'm checking them out.

lilliesnan Report 16 Apr 2012 13:51

Derek....I kind of suspected you may say that.
Reason I questioned it was that 1881 and 1911 census show her birthplace as Burnaston, Derbyshire BUT 1891 and 1901 show Eling, Romsey, Hampshire. This is causing the confusion.

Husband and children are the same on all census records. !!!!!

Were you able to find any baptisms that confirmed her name as EMMA MARIA BARTON. Not that I would ever doubt you :-D

Am desperate to confirm her parentage and birth place so I can proceed with my research. Of course finding her marriage to William would be ideal, that is if they ever married. Nothing surprises me any more with my lot

Thanks for you time and trouble, will keep looking. Guess I now need to order this other birth cert.
Susan

Derek

Derek Report 16 Apr 2012 00:10

Susan....in which case your EMMA BARTON is in fact EMMA MARIA BARTON born 1862 Portsea island Southampton hampshire..as is made quite clear on two consecutive Censuses........along with the children you mention..and William bridges of longford derbyshire.......

Hi Derek, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
Garden needed weeding !

Children of William Bridges and Emma are

George 1882 - born (Horninglow) Burton on Trent

William Henry 1884 - born (Horninglow) Burton on Trent

Frederick James 1886 - born (Horninglow) Burton on Trent

Thomas (my gr.grandfather) 1888 - born (Horninglow) Burton on Trent

Ellen Grace 1890 - Born (Horninglow) Burton on Trent

Margaret Elizabeth 1894 - Born (Stretton) Burton on Trent

Arthur Edward 1895 - Born (Stretton) Burton on Trent

Mary Ann 1896 - Born (Stretton) Burton on Trent

Alfred 1899 - Born (Stretton) Burton on Trent

Alice & Emma (twins)1902

Agnes 1903

Caroline 1905.

Quite a brood :-S

Family were living at Bridge Street, Stretton in 1901 so I assume last 4 were born there.

WILLIAM BRIDGES was born 28 March 1859 in Rodsley Longford, son of John Bridges and Elizabeth Neal.........
John Bridges was born abt 1818 in Beeston, Norfolk and died 1905, I think he is buried at Longford Churchyard with his wife who died abt 1886. John moved to Derbyshire sometime between 1841 and 1848 where he married Elizabeth at St Chads church.

ELIZABETH NEAL was born abt 1821 in Longford, daughter of Thomas Neal and Grace (Middleton ?)
I think Thomas Neal was born Longford and Grace in Marston on Dove.

Any little snippets of information that you can find may help me solve this mystery. Am counting on you Derek - no pressure lol :-D

PS On a different note I am also a descendant of a Gregson from Overseal/Ashbourne/Longford area. Sadly not the ones Mark is looking for :-(

Derek

Derek Report 15 Apr 2012 18:52

Mark..I think you're up a gum tree..there is no Eliza daughter of Charles in the right timescale in Derbyshire.........

The only one i can find is 1862 at Longford daughter of John and Martha.

As a descendant of the gregson family..i can tell you that the biggest concentration of Gregsons in the whole wide world.(for the last three centuries at least).is Preston Lancashire.

I'll keep looking for a bit but I have trolled through all the 1871 censuses and can find no Eliza daughter of Charles.....anywhere in the country....

derek.

For Derek's reference, this is the thread relating to Eliza
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1297284

I should point out that when Eliza's brother Handel (born Lancs) married he gave his father's name as Richard.
