Hi derek

I was wondering if you had any records relating to Beeley? My gx? grandfather married there in about 1800 - Josiah Windle to Dorothy Badgeley. Whilst I can trace her family, I am struggling to find anything more about him - ie where born etc so it may be helpful if any of the parish records have any details about him, maybe who was a witness at his wedding etc?

Any help gratefully received.

Hello June..we have a big problem here........and i don't know why...........two possible reasons..bearing in mind the unreliability of older records........first in the way of Spelling..There is an Eliza Demon..that fits.............and the other is the father's name...........John.......I have more than one Certificate in my own family where the father's name is wrong........I have a perfectly good Eliza Dayman botn 1839 with a father William.............pity you don't know any of her siblings.......

Hello Maureen..I have examined both the Trusley and dalbury leas records.and there is no Joseph Stanley...indeed the only JOSEPH STANLEY I have found in the whole of Derbyshire that might fit was baptised at All Saints Derby 16.07.1669...which is in the right area, but would mean he was married age 32....his father was Thomas...............there is an earlier baptism at Wirksworth(1656)..but that would be pushing it.

Hi Derek,
STILL trying to find the origins of Joseph Stanley! Do you have the database for Trusley & Dalbury Lees? If so, would you mind taking a look to see if there are any Stanley's recorded in that area in the 1600s. On his marriage, in 1701 at Dalbury, Joseph's parish was given as Trusley but I suspect he was from elsewhere so I'm just trying to check as a process of elimination!
Many thanks Maureen

Hello Derek,
I would be very grateful if you could find out anything about Eliza Dayman but she doesn't appear to exist before her marriage!! I'll keep looking on the Notice Board anyway in case you can work your magic once again, and thank you once more for all the info.
Kind regards,
Mags.

Derek Report 27 Feb 2013 23:08

Hello again Anne.here is the news you have been waiting for.......vaguely in chronological order......

THOMAS GOODWIN 1810 a Tape Weaver all his life) Cheadle Staffs..son of RALPH GOODWIN (a Weaver of Cheadle) and Ann Goodwin nee HARRISON..who married 27.08.1810...........

.. married Hannah Brookes at Wirksworth (strictly speaking Middleton by Wirksworth) 22.10.1848..........

but that's not all of it because a look at the 1851 Census shows three children who can't possibly be Hannah's..and the age difference always gets my antenna going for a previous marriage...........and i found it!!

THOMAS GOODWIN (tape Weaver of Cheadle) married ANN BOAM (born 01.12.1812 .daughter of Joseph and Mary) of Youlgreave..they married at Youlgreave 24.12.1832..and had three children:-

Richard 1833..George 1836 both at Youlgreave..and William 1839 at Wirksworth.......

ANN GOODWIN nee Boam then died in 1848 and was buried at Middleton by Wirksworth 19.07.1848 aged 36

THOMAS our renowned Tape Weaver then ,with indecent haste it seems to me..wove his spell upon Hannah Brookes and married her at Wirksworth 22.10.1848..and began immediately to breed a large family.....more of that anon....

So Hannah Brooks born 1826 Middleton by Wirksworth..daughter of GEORGE BROOKS born 28.07.1788 baptised 17.09.1788 a Miner and Sarah nee HICKTON....whom he married 27.12.1821....

The children of Thomas Goodwin and Hannah were as follows.....I only have some of the baptism dates so far...

Mary Ann 11.06.1854 but appears as 8 years old on the 1851..so might have been Anns child...baptism date is correct.
Martha 09.09.1849
Sarah Ann 10.11.1850
James 1857
Harriet 1858.
Annie 1860
Mary 1865
John William 1867
Ada..born Manchester 1872..
and a grandson Thomas George Goodwin born 1880..who i assume is the child of one of the three sons of Thomas and Ann..looks like a bereavement........I can check it out.
Thomas Goodwin died AMJ 1891...
so there you are......quite a saga........enjoy!!

I wondered, if you have access to Derbyshire records, perhaps you could help me find Levi Slater’s parents.
Levi was born about 1786 probably in the Derbyshire area. He married Elizabeth Williams born on 14th December 1783, at West Hallam in Derbyshire on 18th December 1806. (I think her parents were William Williams and Elizabeth not sure of her maiden name.)
Levi & Elizabeth had Thomas Ch: 08 NOV 1807 West Hallam, Derby Sarah - Ch: 25 OCT 1809 West Hallam, Derby, James - Christening: 27 DEC 1812 Pinxton, Derby + ? ?.
Elizabeth may have died. Levi MAY have remarried Hannah Burton on 26th November 1827 in Alfreton and had 2 children, Levi and Ruth OR this Levi may be an ‘unrecorded’ son or a cousin. There are GRO death records of 2 Levi Slaters registered at Belper Oct/Dec 1843 and July/Sept 1844 + another Levi Slater at Dudley Staffordshire in 1846 but no ages given, perhaps church records could help.
Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks
Pat

Hello Anne..welcome to my weird and wonderful Derbyshire!

I'm working on this and have found out quite a lot..but in order to not keep you waiting..we have a starting point:_

THOMAS GOODWIN married HANNAH BROOKS at Wirksworth Derbyshire 22.10.1848..and went on to have about eight children with her....but very strangely they seem to have been having children since 1839 or before????? according to the 1851 census..........or was the old goat married before??

He was born c1809 in Cheadle and Hannah was fifteen years younger than he born Middleton by Wirksworth 1826..old goat!!

Thomas died at Wirksworth in the Civil registration District of Belper AMJ 1891 aged 82.

From his marriage record..his father was Ralph a Weaver..and Hannah's father was a Miner in Middleton.

That's as far as i have got...but I'll send you more as i get it.
EDIT 23.33......got it all sorted!! amazing!!..will send details tomorrow.
Derek.

Hello Derek, Mags here. Thank you so much for your reply to my query. I don't know how you did it but you managed to do in about 48 hours what has been frustrating me for several weeks. Needless to say I'm very grateful to you. I apologise for not using the correct method to contact you - it was the first time I had used the notice board - hope I've got it right this time.
You've given me lots of information to work on which will keep me busy for a while,
Regards,
Mags.

Hi Derek

Can you help me please. My great great grandparents were a Thomas and Hannah Goodwinl (nee Brookes). I can not find out any information regarding their parents. I think Thomas was born in Cheadle, Staffordshire in the early 1800's and Hannah I think was born in Middleton, Derbyshire.

Many thanks

Anne

Pat..i have Pm'd you..

Derek

Derek Report 24 Feb 2013 14:56

Hello Maggs.....I hope you can find your way back here from PM.......the parish that is causing all the confusion is WALSGRAVE on SOWE in Coventry Warwickshire..variously spelt (wrongly!) as Sowe..Lowe..Walgrave and Wallsgrove..no wonder you're confuse......

Anyway this is where your Smallwood are to be found............

JOSEPH SMALLWOOD c1820 married SARAH WINDELBURROW c 1818 at Walsgrave on Sowe 12.09.1836.....they had five children:-

George (mentioned by you) baptise 01.10.1837
Thomas baptised 07.07.1840
Caroline 1843
JOHN SMALLWOOD BAPTISED 25.09.1845
Charlotte baptised 05.12.1847......

..further complications seem to arise on the 1851 and 1861 Censuses..until you realise that Joseph died in 1847 and Charlotte is now a widow........and by the fact that she has a further two children..Robert 1855 and Charles H 1857..by one of her two live in lodgers.....presumably! because both children have mother Sarah but no father!!,,

I know that by 1871 John is married and living in North Wingfield..and from then on the story is easy enough to unravel........He married Eliza Dayman in the Chesterfield Registration area in the 3rd Q 1868.......and had the following children-

Charlotte Catherine born 06.12.1868..baptised 21.05.1871
Walter baptised 28.04.1871
Lily baptised 16.11.1873
Agnes baptised 05.09.1875
Florence 01.04.1877
Cyril born 19.07.1879 baptised 07.09.1879

I was wrong about Edgar.he appears about 1884..there may be others.....

A couple of these were born at Pilsley, but all were baptised at North Wingfield
..I'll now go looking for Eliza....I know her father was John Dayman..and that she was born at Church Broughton/Hatton about 1840..she is proving t be very elusive....

Derek.
